Abstract

A medical instrument comprising: (A) a first joint comprising a first member and a second member, the first member configured to be repositionable with respect to the second member in an X-Y plane; (B) a second joint operatively coupled to the first joint, the second joint comprising a third member and a fourth member, the third member configured to be repositionable with respect to the fourth member in a Y-Z plane perpendicular to the X-Y plane; and, (C) a controller operatively coupled to the first joint and the second joint, the controller including a first control configured to direct repositioning of at least one of the first member and the second member, and a second control configured to direct repositioning of at least one of the third member and the fourth member.

What is claimed is:

         69 . A method of operating a medical instrument comprising:
 repositioning a handle of a controller of an occlusion clip applier to cause an occlusion clip to be repositioned from a closed position to an open position;   repositioning the handle of the controller to cause the occlusion clip to be repositioned from the open position to the closed position clamping a left atrial appendage; and,   actuating a first control of the controller to disengage the occlusion clip from the occlusion clip applier.   
     
     
         70 . The method of  claim 69 , wherein:
 the occlusion clip applier includes a pair of repositionable jaws releasably engaging the occlusion clip prior to actuating the first control; and,   repositioning the handle of the controller is operative to cause repositioning of the repositionable jaws.   
     
     
         71 . The method of  claim 69 , further comprising inserting the occlusion clip applier with the occlusion clip through a trocar to reach a surgical site. 
     
     
         72 . The method of  claim 69 , further comprising repositioning a second control of the controller from a first position to a second position for at least one of pitch adjustment and yaw adjustment of the occlusion clip applier. 
     
     
         73 . The method of  claim 72 , further comprising repositioning a lock operatively coupled to the second control to inhibit at least one of pitch adjustment and yaw adjustment of the occlusion clip applier. 
     
     
         74 . The method of  claim 72 , wherein:
 repositioning second control includes repositioning a button of the controller from a first position to a second position by depressing the button and overcoming a spring bias resisting depressing of the button.   
     
     
         75 . A medical instrument comprising:
 an occlusion clip applier including a jaws releasably engaging an occlusion clip, the jaws being selectively repositionable between a closed position and a fully open position;   a conduit operatively coupled to the occlusion clip applier;   a controller operatively coupled to the occlusion clip applier, the controller including a first control and a second control;   wherein the first control includes a repositionable handle operatively coupled to the jaws so that repositioning of the handle is operative to reposition the jaws;   wherein the second control is repositionable and configured to selectively disengage the occlusion clip from the occlusion clip applier;   wherein the conduit interposes the occlusion clip applier and the controller;   wherein the occlusion clip includes a linear beams and the jaws extend longitudinally along the linear beams.   
     
     
         76 . A medical instrument comprising:
 an occlusion clip applier including a jaws releasably engaging a biased-closed occlusion clip having linear beams, the jaws being selectively repositionable between a closed position and a fully open position, the occlusion clip interposing and separating the jaws from one another when engaged by the jaws;   a controller operatively coupled to the occlusion clip applier, the controller including a first control and a second control;   wherein the first control includes a repositionable handle operatively coupled to the jaws so that repositioning of the handle is operative to overcome a bias of the occlusion clip and reposition the jaws;   wherein the second control is repositionable and configured to selectively disengage the occlusion clip from the occlusion clip applier;   wherein the occlusion clip comprises a distal-most aspect of the medical instrument when releasably engaging the occlusion clip applier.
