Abstract
The present invention relates to the treatment of osteoarthritis and pain using IL-1α and IL-1β binding proteins, including anti-IL-1α and anti-IL-1β antibodies and engineered multivalent and multispecific IL-1α and IL-1β binding proteins.

17 . A method for treating pain in an individual comprising the step of administering to the individual:
a binding protein that binds IL-1α and a binding protein that binds IL-1β, wherein the binding proteins are administered to the individual in a mixture, concurrently, or successively; or a binding protein that binds both IL-1α and IL-1β.
18 . The method for treating pain according to claim 17 , wherein the individual suffers from a pain condition selected from the group consisting of allodynia, hyperalgesia, and a combination of allodynia and hyperalgesia.
19 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds IL-1α is an anti-IL-1α antibody.
20 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds IL-1β is an antiIL-1β antibody.
21 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds IL-1α is an antiIL-1α antibody and said binding protein that binds IL-1β is an anti-IL-1β antibody.
22 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds both IL-1α and IL-1β is a bispecific antibody or a dual variable domain immunoglobulin (DVD-Ig) binding protein.
23 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds IL-1α and said binding protein that binds IL-1β are formulated in a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
24 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds both IL-1α and IL-1β is formulated in a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
25 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds IL-1α and said binding protein that binds IL-1β are crystallized.
26 . The method according to 17 , wherein said binding protein that binds both IL-1α and IL-1β is crystallized.
27 . The method according to claim 25 , wherein said crystallized binding protein that binds IL-1α and said crystallized binding protein that binds IL-1β are formulated in a composition comprising:
optionally, an ingredient;
and a polymeric carrier.
28 . The method according to claim 26 , wherein said crystallized binding protein that binds both IL-1α and IL-1β is formulated in a composition comprising:
optionally, an ingredient; and
a polymeric carrier.

The method according to claim 28 , wherein said polymeric carrier is a polymer selected from one or more of the group consisting of poly (acrylic acid), poly (cyanoacrylates), poly (amino acids), poly (anhydrides), poly (depsipeptide), poly (esters), poly (lactic acid), poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) or PLGA, poly (b-hydroxybutryate), poly (caprolactone), poly (dioxanone); poly (ethylene glycol), poly ((hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide, poly [(organo)phosphazene], poly (ortho esters), poly (vinyl alcohol), poly (vinylpyrrolidone), maleic anhydride-alkyl vinyl ether copolymers, pluronic polyols, albumin, alginate, cellulose and cellulose derivatives, collagen, fibrin, gelatin, hyaluronic acid, oligosaccharides, glycaminoglycans, sulfated polysaccharides, blends and copolymers thereof.
30 . The method according to claim 28 , wherein said ingredient, when present, is selected from the group consisting of albumin, sucrose, trehalose, lactitol, gelatin, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, methoxypolyethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol.
31 . The method according to claim 17 further comprising administering to the individual a second agent that provides a desirable property.

The method for treating pain in an individual according to claim 17 , wherein the individual is suffering from a disease or disorder selected from the group comprising osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile chronic arthritis, septic arthritis, Lyme arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, spondyloarthropathy, systemic lupus erythematosus, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, thyroiditis, asthma, allergic diseases, psoriasis, dermatitis, scleroderma, graft versus host disease, organ transplant
