Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for athletic training optimization are disclosed. In one example, a fitness level change is identified. In one example, a current training intensity is updated to reflect an updated user fitness level.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A system comprising:
 one or more processors;   a user interface;   a heart rate monitor;   an interface configured to receive the a heart rate data from the heart rate monitor;   a global positioning system configured to monitor a user navigation data comprising user location data and a user pace data; and   one or more computer readable storage media storing one or more application programs comprising instructions executable by the one or more processors, the one or more application programs configured to:   monitor a first user heart rate during a time period of an a first athletic activity with the heart rate monitor;   monitor a first user pace during the time period with the global positioning system;   determine an average user heart rate over the time period and an average user pace over the time period; and   identify a current user fitness level utilizing the average first user heart rate over the time period in conjunction with the average first user pace over the time period comprising:
 identifying a performed workout type corresponding to an intensity level determined from the average first user heart rate and a maximum user heart rate, wherein the maximum user heart rate is stored in the one or more computer readable storage media prior to starting the first athletic activity; and 
 identifying a current user fitness level training intensity for the performed workout type utilizing the average first user pace; 
   prompt a user at the user interface to perform a second athletic activity at the current user fitness level training intensity;   monitor a second user heart rate during the second athletic activity with the heart rate monitor;   monitor a second user pace during the second athletic activity with the global positioning system; and   obtain a user fitness level change information utilizing the second user heart rate and the second user pace obtained during the second athletic activity comprising identifying the second user heart rate satisfies a predetermined condition.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the user maximum heart rate is stored in the one or more computer readable storage media prior to starting the athletic activity. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more application programs configure the athletic activity with one or more target parameters prior to a user starting the athletic activity. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 3 , wherein the one or more target parameters comprise a target time duration. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the performed workout type is a lactate threshold run, an easy run, or a marathon pace run. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more application programs are further configured to determine a second current user fitness level training intensity for a different workout type than the performed workout type utilizing the average user pace. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more application programs are further configured to prompt the user to perform a second athletic activity at the current user fitness level training intensity. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the one or more application programs are further configured to:
 determine an average user heart rate for the second athletic activity; and   determine whether the average user heart rate for the second athletic activity falls within a desired heart rate range corresponding to the performed workout type previously identified.   
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the second athletic activity is included in a training plan comprising workouts to be performed by the user. 
     
     
         10 . A method comprising:
 monitoring a user heart rate during a time period with a heart rate sensor;   monitoring a user pace during the time period with a speed sensor;   determining an average user heart rate over the time period and an average user pace over the time period; and   identifying a current user fitness level utilizing the average user heart rate over the time period in conjunction with the average user pace over the time period comprising:
 identifying a performed workout type corresponding to an intensity level determined from the average user heart rate and a maximum user heart rate; and 
 identifying a current user fitness level training intensity for the performed workout type utilizing the average user pace. 
   
     
     
         11 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of  claim 10 , wherein the time period is during performance of an athletic activity, and the method further comprises:
 configuring the athletic activity with one or more target parameters prior to a user starting the athletic activity.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the one or more target parameters comprise a target time duration. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein the performed workout type is a lactate threshold run, an easy run, or a marathon pace run. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein the performed workout type is an aerobic activity, an anaerobic activity, or a VO2 max activity. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 10 , further comprising determining a second current user fitness level training intensity for a second workout type utilizing the average user pace. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein the time period is during performance of an athletic activity, further comprising:
 prompting a user to perform a second athletic activity at the current user fitness level training intensity.   
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16 , further comprising:
 determining an average user heart rate for the second athletic activity; and   determining whether the average user heart rate for the second athletic activity falls within a desired heart rate range corresponding to the performed workout type previously identified.   
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the second athletic activity is included in a training plan comprising workouts to be performed by the user. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein the user maximum heart rate is stored in a device memory prior to starting the time period. 
     
     
         20 . One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media having computer-executable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
 monitoring a user heart rate during a time period with a heart rate sensor;   monitoring a user pace during the time period with a speed sensor;   determining an average user heart rate over the time period and an average user pace over the time period; and   identifying a current user fitness level utilizing the average user heart rate over the time period in conjunction with the average user pace over the time period comprising:
 identifying a performed workout type corresponding to an intensity level determined from the average user heart rate and a maximum user heart rate; and 
 identifying a current user fitness level training intensity for the performed workout type utilizing the average user pace; 
   outputting at a device user interface a user prompt to perform a first user activity subsequent to the time period;   monitoring a user heart rate during the first user activity with the heart rate sensor;   monitoring a user pace during the first user activity with the speed sensor;   outputting at the device user interface a second user prompt to perform a second user activity subsequent to the first user activity;   monitoring a user heart rate during the second user activity with the heart rate sensor;   monitoring a user pace during the second user activity with the speed sensor;   outputting at the device user interface prompts to achieve a parameter target during the second user activity, the parameter target determined prior to a start of the second user activity from a data obtained from a prior user activity; and   obtaining a user fitness level change information utilizing the user heart rate obtained during the second user activity and the user pace obtained during the second user activity comprising identifying the user heart rate during the second user activity satisfies a predetermined condition.   
     
     
         21 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of  claim 20 , wherein the user maximum user heart rate is stored in a device memory prior to starting the time period. 
     
     
       22. A system comprising:
 one or more processors;   a user interface;   a heart rate monitor to provide heart rate monitor outputs;   a global positioning system to provide global positioning system outputs; and   one or more computer readable storage media storing one or more application programs comprising instructions executable by the one or more processors, the one or more application programs configured to:   receive, over time, first heart rate monitor outputs from the heart rate monitor during a first user activity;   receive, over time, first global positioning system outputs from the global positioning system during the first user activity; and   identify a current user fitness level comprising a current fitness training pace at which to perform a second user activity subsequent to the first user activity utilizing the first heart rate monitor outputs and the first global positioning system outputs obtained from the first user activity comprising:
 identifying a performed workout type corresponding to an intensity level determined from the first heart rate monitor outputs and a maximum user heart rate; and 
 identifying the current fitness training pace at which to perform the second user activity subsequent to the first user activity utilizing the first global positioning system outputs; 
   output at the user interface a first user prompt to perform the second user activity subsequent to the first user activity at the current fitness training pace obtained from the first user activity;   receive, over time, second heart rate monitor outputs from the heart rate monitor during the second user activity;   receive, over time, second global positioning system outputs from the global positioning system during the second user activity;   output at the user interface a second user prompt to perform a third user activity subsequent to the first user activity and the second user activity;   receive, over time, third heart rate monitor outputs from the heart rate monitor during the third user activity;   receive, over time, third global positioning system outputs from the global positioning system during the third user activity;   output, over time, at the user interface prompts to achieve a parameter target during the third user activity, the parameter target determined prior to a start of the third user activity from a user data obtained from a prior user activity; and   obtain a user fitness level change information utilizing the third heart rate monitor outputs and third global positioning system outputs obtained during the third user activity comprising identifying the third heart rate monitor outputs obtained during the third user activity satisfy a predetermined condition.    
     
     
       23. The system of  claim 22 , wherein the one or more application programs further configured to monitor the first user activity with respect to one or more target parameters associated with the performed workout type.  
     
     
       24. The system of  claim 22 , wherein
 the maximum user heart rate is stored in the one or more computer readable storage media prior to a start of the first user activity,   the performed workout type comprises a VO2 max activity, a lactate threshold activity, or a marathon pace activity,   the one or more application programs further configured to:
 obtain a second current fitness training pace for a second workout type corresponding to the current user fitness level.  
   
     
     
       25. The system of  claim 22 , wherein the predetermined condition comprises reaching a target heart rate.  
     
     
       26. The system of  claim 22 , wherein the user fitness level change information comprises an updated fitness training pace reflecting a change in user fitness subsequent to the first user activity, and wherein the one or more application programs are further configured to replace in the one or more computer readable storage media a prior current fitness training pace associated with the first user activity with the updated fitness training pace.  
     
     
       27. The system of  claim 22 , wherein:
 the user fitness level change information comprises an updated fitness training pace reflecting a change in user fitness,   the updated fitness training pace is associated with a first workout type, and the user fitness level change information further comprises a second updated fitness training pace associated with a second workout type,   the user fitness level change information further comprises an updated predicted user race time, and wherein the one or more application programs are further configured to:
 output at the user interface during the second user activity prompts to achieve the current fitness training pace; 
 output at the user interface during the second user activity a real-time feedback of the second heart rate monitor outputs and the second global positioning system outputs; and 
 output at the user interface the user fitness level change information.  
   
     
     
       28. The system of  claim 22 , wherein the parameter target comprises the current fitness training pace.  
     
     
       29. The system of  claim 22 , wherein the one or more application programs are further configured to output an indication of the user fitness level change information.  
     
     
       30. The system of  claim 22 , wherein the user data comprises data obtained from the first user activity or the second user activity and is stored in the one or more computer readable storage media prior to the start of the third user activity.  
     
     
       31. The system of  claim 1 , wherein
 the current user fitness level training intensity comprises a VO2 max pace, lactate threshold pace, or marathon pace,   and wherein the one or more application programs are further configured to: output prompts at the user interface during the second athletic activity to assist the user in maintaining the current user fitness level training intensity.    
     
     
       32. The system of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more application programs are configured to identify the current user fitness level by determining whether the first user heart rate satisfies a parameter target associated with a workout type, and wherein the predetermined condition comprises reaching a target heart rate.
