Abstract

The use of sphingomyelinase to increase the levels of skin and mucosal ceramides, as well as dermatolgical and cosmetic compositions containing game which are suitable for topical application are disclosed.

1. A method of preventing or treating atopic eczema, dermatosis or dermatitis comprising topically applying to the affected skin a pharmaceutical composition containing a neutral sphingomyelinase obtained from lactic bacteria in the form of sonicated cells. 
     
     
       2. A method of preventing or treating atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis, Fabry's disease, Gaucher's disease, Tay-Sachs disease or Sjögren-Larsson's syndrome comprising topically applying to the affected skin a pharmaceutical composition containing a neutral sphingomyelinase obtained from lactic bacteria in the form of sonicated cells. 
     
     
       3. The method of  claim 1  or  2  wherein the lactic bacteria is selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus buchneri, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus catenaforme, Lactobacillus cellobiosus, Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus jensenii, Lactobacillus leichmanii, Lactobacillus minutus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rogosae, Lactobacillus salivarius, Bifidobacterium adolescents, Bifidobacterium angulatum, Bifidobacteriumbifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium catenulatum, Bifidobacterium dentium, Bifidobacterium eriksonii, Bifidobacterium infantis, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium plantarum, Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum, Bifidobacterium pseudolongum, Streptococcus lactis, Streptococcus raffinolactis and Streptococcus thermophilus. 
     
     
       4. The method of  claim 1  or  2  wherein the pharmaceutical composition is applied by transdermal administration. 
     
     
       5. The method of  claim 1  or  2  in which the pharmaceutical composition contain 1×10 2  to 1×10 15  lactic bacteria per gram of composition. 
     
     
       6. The method of  claim 1  or  2  in which the pharmaceutical composition is in the form of a cream, ointment, emulsion, lotion, lipstick, soap, shaving soap, shampoo or impregnated in a bandage or gauze, patch.
