Cigarettes

Abstract

A cigarette comprises a tobacco rod of tobacco filler wrapped in a paper wrapper, the circumference of the rod being within a range of 10 mm to 19 mm and the free burn rate of the rod being within a range of 25 to 45 mg min -1 . The cigarette may comprise considerably less tobacco than a cigarette of orthodox circumference yet yield an equal or greater number of puffs.

A .Iadd.finished .Iaddend.cigarette .[.comprising a tobacco.]. .Iadd.of commercially acceptable quality and elegant appearance in the form of an elongated rod of uniform cross-section throughout its length capable of sustained smoulder when lit but not being smoked, .Iadd.said elongated .Iaddend.rod .[.which rod comprises.]. .Iadd.consisting of .Iaddend.a .Iadd.cut .Iaddend.tobacco filler.[.and.]..Iadd., .Iaddend.a .Iadd.cigarette .Iaddend.paper wrapper, .Iadd.circumscribing said cut tobacco filler, a filter in abutment with one end of said cut tobacco filler and a tipping wrapper maintaining said filter in abutment with said one end of said cut tobacco filler, .Iaddend.the circumference of said .Iadd.elongated .Iaddend.rod being within a range of 10 mm to 19 mm, and having a .Iadd.cut .Iaddend.tobacco filler packing density within the range of 150 mg per cm 3  to 350 mg per cm 3  yielding a free burn rate of said rod within a range of 25 to 45 mg min -1  .Iadd., the aforesaid cigarette utilizing tobacco at greater efficiency than conventional commercially marketed cigarettes.Iaddend.. 
     
     
       2. A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, wherein said circumference is within a range of 12.5 mm to 19 mm. .[. 
     
     
       3.  A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, wherein the packing density of said tobacco filler is within a range of 150 mg per cm 3  to 350 mg cm 3 ..]. 
     
     
       4. A cigarette as claimed in claim .[.3.]. .Iadd.1.Iaddend., wherein the packing density of said .Iadd.cut .Iaddend.tobacco filler is within a range of 200 mg per cm 3  to 300 mg per cm 3 .

A cigarette as claimed in claim 1.[.and further comprising a.]..Iadd., wherein said .Iaddend.filter .Iadd.is .Iaddend.of the same transverse dimensions as .Iadd.the cut tobacco filler portion of .Iaddend.said .Iadd.elongated .Iaddend.rod. .Iadd.6. A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, wherein said cigarette paper wrapper is co-terminus with said cut tobacco filler at the end thereof opposite said filter to thereby fully expose said cut tobacco filler at the end of said elongated rod opposite said filter. .Iaddend. .Iadd.7. A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, wherein said cigarette paper wrapper contains a conventional cigarette paper air permeability value and a conventional level of burn rate promoting additives. .Iaddend. .Iadd.8. A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cut tobacco filler portion of said elongated rod has a firmer feel 
     
     
        than conventional commercially marketed cigarettes. .Iaddend. .Iadd.9.  A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, which obtains a firm ash formation when smoked. .Iaddend. .Iadd.10. A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, which contains on the order of 25% less tobacco, and yet provides an equal or greater number of puffs, than conventional commercially marketed cigarettes. .Iaddend. .Iadd.11. A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, which provides in excess of about 8 puffs. .Iaddend. .Iadd.12. A cigarette as claimed in claim 1, wherein said elongated rod is of circular cross-section having a circumference within a range of 15 to 17 mm, and said cut tobacco filler has a length of approximately 100 mm. .Iaddend. .Iadd.13. A cigarette as claimed in claim 11, which provides between about 8 and 13 puffs. .Iaddend. .Iadd.14. A cigarette as claimed in claim 12, wherein said filter is approximately 20 mm in length. .Iaddend. .Iadd.15. A cigarette as claimed in claim 12, wherein said elongated rod has a circumference of approximately 15.7 mm. .Iaddend. .Iadd.16. A cigarette as claimed in claim 12, wherein said cut tobacco filler is utilized at an efficiency on the order of two times greater than tobacco utilization in conventional commercially marketed cigarettes. .Iaddend.
