Insect repellent compositions and process having an N-substituted hydroxyalkyl amine as an active ingredient

Abstract

Lower hydroxyalkyl amines in which at least one of the amino hydrogens is replaced by an acyclic monoterpenyl radical or hydrogenated acyclic monoterpenyl radical are useful repellents for insect repelling compositions.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A hydroxyalkyl amine selected from the group consisting of: N-(2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl)-di(3,7-dimethyloctyl) amine,   N-(2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl) geranyl amine, N-(2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl) digeranyl amine, and N-(2-hydroxyethyl) geranyl amine.   
     
     
       2. N-(2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl) di(3,7-dimethyloctyl) amine. 
     
     
       3. N-(2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl) geranyl amine. 
     
     
       4. N-(2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl) digeranyl amine. 
     
     
       5. N-(2-hydroxyethyl) geranyl amine. .Iadd. 6. An amine of the formula ##STR4## wherein R is a hydroxyalkyl group having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms R' is an acyclic monoterpenyl radical, and R" is either a hydrogen atom or the same 
     
     
        as R'. .Iaddend..Iadd. 7.  The amine of claim 6 wherein said hydroxyalkyl group is 2-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylethyl. .Iaddend..Iadd. 8.
