Abstract
A method of forming a composite roll which has a hard wear resistant shell and a tough shock resistant arbor. The shell is adhesively affixed to the arbor, thus avoiding a shrink fit which places the shell under tension. The roll is adapted for use in applications where the arbor-shell interface reaches temperatures up to 400°F, and the adhesive must withstand these temperatures without breaking down. The preferred adhesive is a thermosetting epoxy material cured at an elevated temperature with an aromatic diamine.

1. A method of forming a composite roll which has a hard wear-resistant metal shell and a tough shock-resistant arbor .Iadd.encircled by said shell.Iaddend., said method comprising: relatively machining the shell and arbor to provide a total clearance therebetween of 0.003 to 0.005 inch based on diameter when the parts are at room temperature; applying an adhesive to .Iadd.the cylindrical surface of the body of .Iaddend.said arbor; assembling the shell and arbor; heating the adhesive to its curing temperature; slowly cooling the assembled shell and arbor; and dressing the shell to its finished dimensions.
2. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said shell is acicular iron.
3. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said adhesive is thermosetting epoxy material cured with an aromatic diamine and capable of withstanding a temperature of at least 212°F.
4. A method as defined in claim 1 comprising a further step of standing the arbor on end and effecting the step of assembling the shell and arbor by lowering the shell over the arbor.
5. A method as defined in claim 1 comprising a further step of standing the shell on end and effecting the step of assembling the shell and arbor by lowering the arbor into the shell.
6. A method as defined in claim 1 comprising a further step of relatively rotating said arbor and said shell as they are assembled.
7. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said shell is heated to a temperature sufficient to cure said adhesive before the shell is assembled with the arbor, and the heated shell supplies the heat for curing said adhesive.
8. A method as defined in claim 7 in which said shell is heated to a temperature about 50° to 100°F above the optimum curing temperature of the adhesive.
9. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said arbor has a bore, and said adhesive is heated to its curing temperature by injecting heated fluid through said bore.
