Abstract
A method, composition and system respond to ionizing radiation to adjust biological activity. In some approaches the ionizing radiation is X-ray or extreme ultraviolet radiation that produces luminescent responses that induce biologically active responses.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1. An ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition, comprising:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least one wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material being responsive to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band to become at least partially biologically inactive.
2. An ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition, comprising:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least one wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material including a substance having at least one photoisomer, the at least one photoisomer being responsive to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band to at least partially convert from a first isomeric form to a second isomeric form.
3. An ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition, comprising:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least one wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material that includes a binding partner of a protein, the photosensitive biologically active material being responsive to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band to modify an interaction between the binding partner and the protein.
4. The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 3 , wherein the binding partner has a probability of binding to the protein that is changeable in response to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band.
5. The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 3 , wherein a bound combination of the protein and the binding partner has a level of biological activity that is changeable in response to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band.
6. The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 3 , wherein the protein is a receptor and the binding partner is a receptor ligand having a probability of binding to the receptor that is changeable in response to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band.

The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 3 , wherein the protein is an enzyme, and the binding partner is an enzyme inhibitor or an enzyme activator, the enzyme inhibitor or enzyme activator having a probability of binding to the enzyme that is changeable in response to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band.
8. An ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition, comprising:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least one wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material having a first state with at most a first degree of biological activity and a second state with at least a second degree of biological activity, where the first degree of biological activity is less than the second degree of biological activity, and where the photosensitive biologically active material is responsive to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band to at least partially convert substantially irreversibly from an unconverted state to a converted state, the unconverted state and converted state being uniquely selected from the group consisting of the first state and the second state.

The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 8 , wherein the initial state includes a substance having a first component and a second component joined by a photolabile group, the substance being responsive to optical energy in the at least one wavelength band to at least partially disjoin the first component and the second component.
10. An ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition, comprising:
a first luminescent material, the first luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least a first wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material having a first state with at most a first degree of biological activity and a second state with at least a second degree of biological activity, where the first degree of biological activity is less than the second degree of biological activity, and where the photosensitive biologically active material is responsive to optical energy in at least the first wavelength band to at least partially convert from an unconverted state to a converted state and further responsive to optical energy in at least a second wavelength band to at least partially convert from the converted state to the unconverted state, the unconverted state and converted state being uniquely selected from the group consisting of the first state and the second state.
11. The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 10 , wherein the photosensitive biologically active material includes a substance having at least one photoisomerizable group, and the first state and the second state are two isomeric forms of the at least one photoisomer.

The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 10 , wherein the first luminescent material has a first responsiveness to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least the first wavelength band, the first responsiveness varying with ionizing radiation energy according to a first excitation spectrum, and further wherein the first luminescent material has a second responsiveness to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least the second wavelength band, the second responsiveness varying with ionizing radiation energy according to a second excitation spectrum, where at least one peak in the first excitation spectrum is substantially nonoverlapping with at least one peak in the second excitation spectrum.

The ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition of claim 10 , wherein the first luminescent material has a first responsiveness to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least the first wavelength band, the first responsiveness varying with ionizing radiation energy according to a first excitation spectrum, and the ionizing-radiation-responsive pharmaceutical composition further comprises a second luminescent material having a second responsiveness to ionizing radiation to produce optical energy in at least the second wavelength band, the second responsiveness varying with ionizing radiation energy according to a second excitation spectrum, where at least one peak in the first excitation spectrum is substantially nonoverlapping with at least one peak in the second excitation spectrum.
14. A method, comprising:
delivering to at least one region an ionizing-radiation-responsive composition, the ionizing-radiation-responsive composition including:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation in at least one ionizing radiation energy band to produce optical energy in at least one optical wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material being responsive to optical energy in the at least one optical wavelength band to become at least partially biologically inactive; and
irradiating at least a portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation in the at least one ionizing radiation energy band.
15. A method, comprising:
delivering to at least one region an ionizing-radiation-responsive composition, the ionizing-radiation-responsive composition including:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation in at least one ionizing radiation energy band to produce optical energy in at least one optical wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material including a substance having at least one photoisomer, the at least one photoisomer being responsive to optical energy in the at least one optical wavelength band to at least partially convert from a first isomeric form to a second isomeric form; and
irradiating at least a portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation in the at least one ionizing radiation energy band.
16. A method, comprising:
delivering to at least one region an ionizing-radiation-responsive composition, the ionizing-radiation-responsive composition including:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation in at least one ionizing radiation energy band to produce optical energy in at least one optical wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material that includes a binding partner of a protein, the photosensitive biologically active material being responsive to optical energy in the at least one optical wavelength band to modify an interaction between the binding partner and the protein; and
irradiating at least a portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation in the at least one ionizing radiation energy band.
17. A method, comprising:
delivering to at least one region an ionizing-radiation-responsive composition, the ionizing-radiation-responsive composition including:
a luminescent material, the luminescent material being responsive to ionizing radiation in at least one ionizing radiation energy band to produce optical energy in at least one optical wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material having a first state with at most a first degree of biological activity and a second state with at least a second degree of biological activity, where the first degree of biological activity is less than the second degree of biological activity, and where the photosensitive biologically active material is responsive to optical energy in the at least one optical wavelength band to at least partially convert substantially irreversibly from an initial state to a final state, the initial state and final states being uniquely selected from the group consisting of the first state and the second state; and
irradiating at least a portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation in the at least one ionizing radiation energy band.
18. A method, comprising:
delivering to at least one region an ionizing-radiation-responsive composition, the ionizing-radiation-responsive composition including:
at least one luminescent material, the at least one luminescent material having a first response to ionizing radiation in at least a first ionizing radiation energy band to produce optical energy in at least a first optical wavelength band and a second response to ionizing radiation in at least a second ionizing radiation energy band to produce optical energy in at least a second optical wavelength band; and
a photosensitive biologically active material, the photosensitive biologically active material having a first state with at most a first degree of biological activity and a second state with at least a second degree of biological activity, where the first degree of biological activity is less than the second degree of biological activity, and where the photosensitive biologically active material is responsive to optical energy in at least the first optical wavelength band to at least partially convert from the first state to the second state and further responsive to optical energy in at least the second optical wavelength band to at least partially convert from the second state to the first state; and
irradiating at least a first portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation in at least the first ionizing radiation energy band; and
irradiating at least a second portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation in at least the second ionizing radiation energy band.
