Rhamnolipid-based formulations

Abstract

The present invention relates to rhamnolipid-based formulations to clean, disinfect, deodorize, and act as an antimicrobial and antifungal agent for living and working environments. In addition, the present invention relates to the use of rhamnolipids to create a bio-film when applied to a surface, which prevents the growth of bacteria and fungus. This technique is especially useful to create clean surface areas for medical procedures, chemical testing, during food preparation, as well as for daycare centers and hospitals.

1. A method for treating wounds on animals comprising:
 applying into the wound of the animal an effective amount of an antibacterial and antifungal formulation comprising: 
 a rhamnolipid; and 
 a carrier comprising at least one of polyethylene glycol, silica, or a mixture of water and ethanol; 
 wherein the formulation comprises 0.01% to 70% of the rhamnolipid and the balance being the carrier; 
 wherein the rhamnolipid contains at least one of a mono-rhamnolipid, a di-rhamnolipid, or a mixture of both; 
 wherein the rhamnolipid is a highly purified rhamnolipid having at least 90% purity or a crude rhamnolipid. 
 
     
     
       2. An antibacterial and antifungal formulation consisting of:
 a rhamnolipid; 
 a carrier comprising at least one of polyethylene glycol, silica, and a mixture of water and ethanol; 
 wherein the formulation comprises 0.01% to 70% of the rhamnolipid and the balance being the carrier; 
 wherein the rhamnolipid contains at least one of a mono-rhamnolipid, a di-rhamnolipid, or a mixture of both; 
 wherein the rhamnolipid is a highly purified rhamnolipid having at least 90% purity or a crude rhamnolipid; 
 wherein the antibacterial and antifungal formulation is a pet cleaning formulation, a wound healing formulation for pets, a nebulizer solution, a cleaning solution to impregnate a wipe, or a solution to impregnate at least one of a fabric or a non-fabric substrate during its manufacture.
