Plant extract mixtures and their uses

Abstract

A composition comprising extract of one or more plants of one or more of the following plant families. Cissus, Vernonia and Brillantasia . Such compositions have beneficial activity principlally in controlling weight gain and obesity, especially in conjunction with chitosan or a chilosan derivative and an antioxidant such as vitamin C.

1. An herbal composition for weight loss in a mammal comprising an effective amount of an aqueous extract of leaves and stems of  Cissus quadrangularis  and an effective amount of an aqueous extract of roots of  Vernonia glabra.    
     
     
       2. A composition as claimed in  claim 1 , further comprising an aqueous extract of one or more plants of the plant genus  Brillantaisia  obtained from leaves of  Brillantaisia  sp. 
     
     
       3. A composition of  claim 2 , further comprising at least one of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E and chitosan. 
     
     
       4. A composition as claimed in  claim 1 , wherein the amount of the  Cissus quadrangularis  extract is in an amount of 50-90%; and, wherein the  Vernonia glabra  extract is in an amount of 10-50% based on the total volume of the composition. 
     
     
       5. A composition as claimed in  claim 4 , which comprises 60-80%  Cissus quadrangularis  extract and 20-40%  Vernonia glabra  extract based on the total volume of the composition. 
     
     
       6. A composition as claimed in  claim 1 , the further comprising an aqueous extract of leaves of  Brillantasia  sp. 
     
     
       7. A composition for weight loss in a mammal comprising an aqueous extract of leaves and stems of  Cissus quadrangularis  and an aqueous extract of leaves of one or more plants of the plant genus  Brillantaisia.    
     
     
       8. A composition of  claim 7 , further comprising at least one of the group consisting of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E and chitosan.
