Abstract

A handle for a mattress border is anchored with spaced grommets in the border against which anchors on the handle ends may bear. The anchors are designed to allow a leading end of the handle to be drawn through grommet opening. A back strap between the grommet openings is shaped to allow clamping to move the grommet opening to aligned position. To allow the drawing of the anchors through the grommet opening, at least one of the anchors is provided with first couplings. A puller rod is designed to be inserted through at least one of the grommet openings. The puller rod is provided with second couplings, designed to cooperate with the first couplings to achieve the pulling function. In one variant the clamping device may be used to bend the back bar and border into ‘U’ shape, with the inside of the border on the convex side of the U, so that a straight puller rod may pull the leading anchor through the aligned grommet openings in the sequence inside to outside to inside relative to the border material.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

       1. Apparatus for inserting a handle in a mattress border, wherein said mattress border includes a pair of grommets for receiving each end of said handle, and said handle is shaped for pulling insertion from outside to inside through said grommet and to resist travel through said grommet in the opposite direction,
means for forming said border into a shape concave toward said outside between said grommets,
inner and outer shaping members for clamping said handle between said shaping members to face respective grommets,
means for pulling opposite ends of said handle through said grommets after moving said inner shaping member laterally relative to said handle.

       2. Apparatus for inserting a handle in a mattress border, which mattress border includes a pair of grommets for receiving opposite ends of said handle inserted from outside to inside said border,
means for shaping said border to be generally concave toward the outside,
shaping means for shaping a handle to have its ends facing said grommets,
said shaping means comprising an inner and an outer shaping member for clamping said handle between them,
means for engaging and pulling said opposite ends of said handle through said grommets after moving said inner shaping member laterally out of line with said inner shaping member.

       3. A method for inserting a handle in a mattress border, wherein said mattress border includes a pair of grommets for receiving opposite ends of said handle, and said handle is shaped for pulling insertion from outside to inside through said grommet and to resist travel through said grommet in the opposite direction, said method comprising the steps of:
forming said border into a shape concave toward said outside between said grommets,
clamping said handle between inner and outer shaping members to face respective grommets,
moving said inner shaping members laterally relative to said handle, and pulling said opposite ends of said handle through said grommets.

       4. A method for inserting a handle in a mattress border, which mattress border includes a pair of grommets for receiving opposite ends of said handle inserted from outside to inside said border,
shaping said border to be generally concave toward the outside,
shaping a handle to have its ends facing said grommets,
clamping said handle between inner and outer shaping members,
moving said inner shaping member laterally out of line with said inner shaping member, and
pulling the opposite ends of said handle through said grommets.

       5. The method of claim 4 which further comprises moving said outer shaping member away from said border,
thereafter moving said inner shaping member into line with said outer shaping member and clamping a new handle between said inner and outer shaping members.
