Compositions and methods for the control of smoking

Abstract

Compositions and methods for the control of smoking are described. The compositions according to the invention comprise: (a) a xanthine oxidase inhibitor; (b) a cytochrome P450 inhibitor; (c) a sugar; (d) a source of phosphate; and, optionally, (e) one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients.

I claim: 
     
       1. A method for the control of the desire to smoke, which comprises administering to a subject in need of such treatment a composition which comprises: (a) a xanthine oxidase inhibitor;   (b) a cytochrome P450 inducing compound;   (c) a sugar;   (d) a source of phosphate; and optionally,   (e) one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers or excipients.   
     
     
       2. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 1, wherein said xanthine oxidase inhibitor is selected from a flavonoid, purine analogue, quinazoline, triazine and pyrazalo (3,4-d)pyrimidine. 
     
     
       3. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 2, wherein said flavonoid is selected from the group of flavanones, flavonols, flavones, anthocyanins, catechols and catechol tannins. 
     
     
       4. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 2, wherein said flavonoid is in the form of an extract from a plant source. 
     
     
       5. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 4, wherein said flavonoid is an extract from Eupatorium purpurem. 
     
     
       6. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 5 which contains the compound euparin. 
     
     
       7. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 1, wherein said xanthine oxidase inhibitor is euparin. 
     
     
       8. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 1, wherein said cytochrome P450 inducer comprising a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, chlorinated agent, charcoal broiled meat, or a smokey essence. 
     
     
       9. A composition according to claim 7, wherein said cytochrome P450 inducer is a smokey essence. 
     
     
       10. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 1, wherein said sugar component comprising fructose, sucrose, or a sugar which promotes uric acid production in man. 
     
     
       11. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 1, wherein said phosphate is an inorganic phosphate, organic phosphate, or other phosphorus containing compound. 
     
     
       12. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 1, wherein said source of phosphate is phosphoric acid, or a phosphate salt. 
     
     
       13. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 1 which additionally includes vitamin D. 
     
     
       14. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 3, wherein said flavonoid is in the form of an extract from a plant source. 
     
     
       15. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 14, wherein said flavonoid is an extract from Eupatorium purpurem. 
     
     
       16. A method for the control of the desire to smoke according to claim 15 which contains the compound euparin.
