Abstract
The present invention is an implant for securing to a bone to form a plurality of cement cells, The implant has a bone engagement portion for engagement with the bone. The implant has surfaces defining a first plurality of cement compartments in the bone engagement portion for alignment with a second plurality of cement compartments in the bone to form a plurality of cement cells extending between the implant and the bone when the implant is secured to the bone. The cement cells receive cement therein to form plugs of cement extending between the implant and the bone to secure the implant to the bone,

1. A method of securing an implant to bone comprising the steps of: providing an implant having a bone engagement portion for engagement with the bone and having surfaces defining a first plurality of spaced apart cement compartments in the bone engagement portion; making a second plurality of spaced apart cement compartments in the bone; placing the bone engagement portion of the implant adjacent the bone; aligning the spaced apart cement compartments in the implant with the spaced apart cement compartments in the bone to form spaced apart cement cells extending between the implant and the bone; and placing cement in the cement cells to form spaced apart plugs of cement extending between the implant and the bone to secure the implant to the bone.
2. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of placing cement in the cement cells is performed after performing said step of placing the bone engagement portion of the implant adjacent the bone.
3. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of placing cement in the cement cells includes filling each cement cell through its own respective fill port.
4. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of placing cement in the cement calls includes the steps of placing a quantity of cement between the implant and the bone and moving the implant and the bone toward each other to squeeze the cement into the cement cells while the cement compartments in the implant and in the bone are aligned.
5. A method as set forth in claim 1 further including providing at least one exit channel in the implant extending from the cement compartments and allowing excess cement to flow through the at least one exit channel.
6. A method of securing an implant to bone comprising the steps of providing an implant having a plurality of spaced apart recesses arranged in a first array of spaced apart recesses with each of the recesses in the first array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the implant, forming a second array of spaced apart recesses in the bone with each of the recesses in the second array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the bone, said step of forming a second array of recess includes forming the second array of recesses with a configuration which is the same as the configuration of the first array of recesses, filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement, positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses, and forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement each of which extends from a recess in the first array of recesses through the interface between the bone and the implant into a recess in the second array of recesses by solidifying the cement in the recesses in the bone and the recesses in the implant after having performed said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
7. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement is performed prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
8. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement is performed after performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
9. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling the first and second arrays of recesses with cement includes filling the recesses in the implant with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
10. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling the first and second arrays of recesses with cement includes filling the recesses in the bone with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
11. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone includes forcing cement out from between the surface area on the bone and the surface area on the implant by pressing the bone and implant together.
12. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the bone in engagement with the surface area on the implant includes engaging the surface area on the bone with the surface area on the implant at locations between the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses.
13. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone includes engaging the surface area on the implant with the surface area on the bone at locations which extend around entrances to the recesses in the implant and entrances to the recesses in the bone.
14. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of providing an implant having a first array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the implant includes providing an implant having a plurality of ridge portions each of which extends around an opening to a recess in the first array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone includes positioning the implant with each of the ridge portions in the plurality of ridge portions engaging the bone around an opening to a recess in the second array of recesses.
15. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement includes forming a plurality of separate bodies of hardened cement which are separated by portions of the surface area on the implant and portions of the surface area on the bone which are disposed in engagement at the interface between the bone and implant during solidification of the cement in the recesses in the bone and the recesses in the implant.
16. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement includes conducting a flow of cement along a plurality of passages which have a common inlet and extend to a plurality of spaced apart recesses.
17. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses includes conducting cement along a first passage at least partially formed in the implant to a first recess in the first array of recesses and conducting cement along a second passage at least partially formed in the implant to a second recess in the first array of recesses.
18. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement is performed with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone and includes conducting a flow of cement along a plurality of paths disposed between the implant and the bone and connected in communication with the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses.
19. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement is performed with the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone and includes conducting a flow of cement along a first path disposed between the implant and the bone to a first recess in the first array of recesses and a first recess in the second array of recesses and conducting a flow of cement along a second path disposed between the implant and the bone to a second recess in the first array of recesses and a second recess in the second array of recesses.
20. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of solidifying cement in recesses in the bone and recesses in the implant includes solidifying the cement at a plurality of locations which are separated by engagement between the surface area on the bone with the surface area on the implant at the interface between the bone and the implant.
21. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes aligning a reference marker on the implant with a reference marker on the bone, the reference marker on the implant being spaced from and disposed in a predetermined relationship with the first array of recesses, the reference marker on the bone being spaced from and disposed in a predetermined relationship with the second array of recesses.

A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein a first portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between first and second recesses in the first array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between second and third recesses in the first array of recesses, a third portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between the first and third recesses in the first array of recesses, a first portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between first and second recesses in the second array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between second and third recesses in the second array of recesses, and a third portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between the first and third recesses in the second array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes positioning the first portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the first portion of the surface area on the bone, positioning the second portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the second portion of the surface area on the bone, and positioning the third portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the third portion of the surface area on the bone.

A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein a first portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a first recess in the first array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a second recess in the first array of recesses, a third portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a third recess in the first array of recesses, a first portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a first recess in the second array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a second recess in the second array of recesses, and a third portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a third recess in the second array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes positioning the first portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the first portion of the surface area on the bone, positioning the second portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the second portion of the surface area on the bone, and positioning the third portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the third portion of the surface area on the bone.
24. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein recesses in the first array of recesses and recesses in the second array of recesses have open end portions of the same size and configuration, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes positioning the implant with the open end portions of the recesses in the first array of recesses aligned with the open end portions of the recesses in the second array of recesses.
25. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said step of forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement includes forming bodies of hardened cement which are free of interconnections formed by hardened cement and extending between the bodies of hardened cement.
26. A method as set forth in claim 6 further including the steps of scribing a plurality of alignment marker lines into the surface area on the bone, said second array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, said step of positioning the implant on the bone including aligning a plurality of alignment markers on the implant with the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, said first array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment markers on the implant.
27. A method of securing an implant to a bone comprising the steps of providing an implant having a first array of recesses which extend inward from a surface area on the implant, each of the recesses of a plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses being spaced apart from other recesses in the first array of recesses, forming a second array of recesses in the bone with each of the recesses of a plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the bone, each of the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses being spaced apart from other recesses in the second array of recesses, positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses aligned with the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses, and forming a plurality of spaced apart and discrete bodies of cement each of which extends from a recess in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses through the interface between the bone and the implant into a recess in the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses, said step of forming a plurality of spaced apart and discrete bodies of cement includes forming the bodies of cement with the bodies of cement free of interconnections which extend between the bodies of cement and are formed of cement.
28. A method as set forth in claim 27 further including filling the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone and filling the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
29. A method as set forth in claim 27 further including filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement after performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
30. A method as set forth in claim 27 further including filling the recesses in the implant with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
31. A method as set forth in claim 27 further including filling the recesses in the bone with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
32. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone includes forcing cement out from between the surface area on the bone and the surface area on the implant by pressing the bone and implant together.

A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the bone in engagement with the surface area on the implant includes engaging the surface area on the bone with the surface area on the implant at locations between the plurality of recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses.

A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone includes engaging the surface area on the implant with the surface area on the bone at locations which extend completely around entrances to recesses in the implant and entrances to recesses in the bone.
35. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of providing an implant having a first array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the implant includes providing an implant having a plurality of ridge portions each of which extends around an opening to a recess in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone includes positioning the implant with each of the ridge portions in the plurality of ridge portions engaging the bone around an opening to a recess in the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses.
36. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of forming a plurality of spaced apart and discrete bodies of cement includes forming a plurality of bodies of cement which are separated by portions of the surface area on the implant and portions of the surface area on the bone which are disposed in engagement at the interface between the bone and implant during solidification of the cement in the recesses in the bone and the recesses in the implant.
37. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of forming a plurality of spaced apart and discrete bodies of cement includes conducting cement along a first passage at least partially formed in the implant to a first recess in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses and conducting cement along a second passage at least partially formed in the implant to a second recess in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses.
38. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of forming a plurality of spaced apart and discrete bodies of cement is at least partially performed with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone and includes conducting a flow of cement along a plurality of paths disposed between the implant and the bone and connected in communication with the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses.
39. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of forming a plurality of spaced apart and discrete bodies of cement is at least partially performed with the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone and includes conducting a flow of cement along a first path disposed between the implant and the bone to a first recess in the first array of recesses and a first recess in the second array of recesses and conducting a flow of cement along a second path disposed between the implant and the bone to a second recess in the first array of recesses and a second recess in the second array of recesses.
40. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of forming a plurality of spaced apart and discrete bodies of cement includes solidifying the cement at a plurality of locations which are separated by engagement between the surface area on the bone with the surface area on the implant at the interface between the bone and the implant.

A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes aligning a reference marker on the implant with a reference marker on the bone, the reference marker on the implant being spaced from and disposed in a predetermined relationship with the first array of recesses, the reference marker on the bone being spaced from and disposed in a predetermined relationship with the second array of recesses.
42. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein a first portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between first and second recesses in the first array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between second and third recesses in the first array of recesses, a third portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between the first and third recesses in the first array of recesses, a first portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between first and second recesses in the second array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between second and third recesses in the second array of recesses, and a third portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between the first and third recesses in the second array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes positioning the first portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the first portion of the surface area on the bone, positioning the second portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the second portion of the surface area on the bone, and positioning the third portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the third portion of the surface area on the bone.
43. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein a first portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a first recess in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a second recess in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses, a third portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a third recess in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses, a first portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a first recess in the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a second recess in the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses, and a third portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a third recess in the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses aligned with the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses includes positioning the first portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the first portion of the surface area on the bone, positioning the second portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the second portion of the surface area on the bone, and positioning the third portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the third portion of the surface area on the bone.
44. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein recesses in the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses and recesses in the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses have open end portions of the same size and configuration, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses aligned with the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses includes positioning the implant with the open end portions of the plurality of recesses in the first array of recesses aligned with the open end portions of the plurality of recesses in the second array of recesses.
45. A method as set forth in claim 27 further including. scribing a plurality of alignment marker lines into the surface area on the bone, said second array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, said step of positioning the implant on the bone including aligning a plurality of alignment markers on the implant with the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, said first array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment markers on the implant.
46. A method of securing an implant to a bone comprising the steps of providing an implant having a first array of recesses which extend inward from a surface area on the implant, forming a second array of recesses in the bone with each of the recesses in the second array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the bone, said step of forming a second array of recesses includes forming the second array of recess with a configuration which is the same as the configuration of the first array of recesses, positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses, and, thereafter, conducting a flow of cement along a flow path disposed between the implant and the bone and connected in communication with the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses to fill the first and second arrays of recesses with cement.
47. A method as set forth in claim 46 further including forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement each of which extends from a recess in the first array of recesses through the interface between the bone and the implant into a recess in the second array of recesses by solidifying the cement in the recesses in the bone and the recesses in the implant.
48. A method as set forth in claim 46 further including conducting a flow of cement from the flow path disposed between the implant and the bone at an outlet from the flow path.
49. A method as set forth in claim 46 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the bone in engagement with the surface area on the implant includes engaging the surface area on the bone with the surface area on the implant at locations between the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses.
50. A method as set forth in claim 46 further including solidifying cement in recesses in the bone and recesses in the implant with the cement in the recesses separated by engagement between the surface area on the bone with the surface area on the implant at the interface between the bone and the implant.
51. A method as set forth in claim 46 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes aligning a reference marker on the implant with a reference marker on the bone, the reference marker on the implant being spaced from and disposed in a predetermined relationship with the first array of recesses, the reference marker on the bone being spaced from and disposed in a predetermined relationship with the second array of recesses.
52. A method as set forth in claim 46, wherein a first portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between first and second recesses in the first array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between second and third recesses in the first array of recesses, a third portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between the first and third recesses in the first array of recesses, a first portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between first and second recesses in the second array of recesses, a second portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between second and third recesses in the second array of recesses, and a third portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between the first and third recesses in the second array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes positioning the first portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the first portion of the surface area on the bone, positioning the second portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the second portion of the surface area on the bone, and positioning the third portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the third portion of the surface area on the bone.
53. A method as set forth in claim 46 wherein recesses in the first array of recesses and recesses in the second array of recesses have open end portions of the same size and configuration, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant and with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses includes positioning the implant with the open end portions of the recesses in the first array of recesses aligned with the open end portions of the recesses in the second array of recesses.
54. A method as set forth in claim 46 further including scribing a plurality of alignment marker lines into the surface area on the bone, said second array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, said step of positioning the implant on the bone including aligning a plurality of alignment markers on the implant with the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, said first array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment markers on the implant.
55. A method of securing an implant to a bone comprising the steps of providing an implant having a first array of spaced apart recesses which extend inward away from a surface area on the implant and having a plurality of spaced apart ridge portions each of which extends around an open end portion of a recess in the first array of recesses and projects outward away from the surface area on the implant, forming a second array of spaced apart recesses in the bone with each of the recesses in the second array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the bone, positioning the implant on the bone, said step of positioning the implant on the bone includes pressing the ridge portions which extend around the open end portions of the recesses in the first array of recesses into the bone at spaced apart locations extending around open end portions of the recesses in the second array of recesses, and forming a plurality of spaced apart bodies of cement each of which extends from a recess in the first array of recesses through a space enclosed by one of the ridge portions and into a recess in the second array of recesses.
56. A method as set forth in claim 55 wherein said step of pressing the ridge portions which extend around the open end portions of the recesses into the bone at spaced apart locations extending around open end portions of the recesses in the second array of recesses includes moving an outer end surface on each of the projecting ridge portions through a plane containing the surface area on the bone.
57. A method as set forth in claim 55 wherein said step of filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement is performed prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
58. A method as set forth in claim 55 wherein said step of filling the recesses in the first and second arrays of recesses with cement is performed after performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
59. A method as set forth in claim 55 wherein said step of filling the first and second arrays of recesses with cement includes filling the recesses in the implant with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
60. A method as set forth in claim 55 wherein said step of filling the first and second arrays of recesses with cement includes filling the recesses in the bone with cement prior to performance of said step of positioning the implant on the bone.
61. A method as set forth in claim 55 wherein said step of forming a plurality of bodies of cement includes forming a plurality of separate bodies of cement which are separated by portions of the surface area on the implant and portions of the surface area on the bone.
62. A method of securing an implant to a bone comprising the steps of providing an implant having a first array of recesses which extend inward from a surface area on the implant, each of the recesses in the first array of recesses being spaced apart from other recesses in the first array of recesses, forming a second array of recesses in the bone with each of the recesses in the second array of recesses extending inward from a surface area on the bone, each of the recesses in the second array of recesses being spaced apart from other recesses in the second array of recesses, scribing a plurality of alignment marker lines into the surface area on the bone, said second array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, positioning the implant on the bone with the first array of recesses aligned with the second array of recesses, said step of positioning the implant on the bone including aligning a plurality of alignment markers on the implant with the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone, said first array of recesses being disposed in a predetermined orientation relative to the alignment markers on the implant, and forming a plurality of spaced apart bodies of cement each of which extends from a recess in the first array of recesses into a recess in the second array of recesses.
63. A method as set forth in claim 62 wherein said step of scribing a plurality of alignment marker lines into the surface area on the bone includes scribing a plurality of linear alignment marker lines into the surface area on the bone, said step of aligning a plurality of alignment markers on the implant with the alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone includes aligning a plurality of linear outer edge portions of the implant with the linear alignment marker lines scribed into the surface area on the bone.

A method as set forth in claim 62 wherein said step of scribing a plurality of alignment marker lines into the surface area on the bone includes positioning a template relative to the bone to locate the alignment marker lines relative to the bone and to the location of the second array of recesses.

A method of securing an implant to a bone comprising the steps of providing an implant having a plurality of spaced apart recesses extending inward from a surface area on the implant, forming a plurality of spaced apart recesses in the bone with each of the recesses in the bone extending inward from a surface area on the bone, positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant, and forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement each of which extends from a recess in the implant through the interface between the bone and the implant into a recess in the bone, said step of forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement includes forming the bodies of hardened cement with the bodies of hardened cement free of interconnections formed of cement and located where the surface area on the implant engages the surface on the bone at the interface between the bone and the implant.
66. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone includes engaging the surface area on the implant with the surface area on the bone at locations which extend around entrances to the recesses in the implant and entrances to the recesses in the bone.
67. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein said step of providing an implant includes providing an implant having a plurality of ridge portions each of which extends around an opening to a recess in the implant, said step of positioning the implant on the bone includes pressing the ridge portions into the bone around openings to the recesses in the bone.
68. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein said step of forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement includes forming a plurality of spaced apart bodies of hardened cement which are separated by portions of the surface area on the implant and portions of the surface area on the bone which are disposed in engagement at the interface between the bone and implant.
69. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein said step of forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement includes conducting a flow of cement along a plurality of passages which have a common inlet and extend to a plurality of spaced apart recesses.
70. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein said step of forming a plurality of bodies of hardened cement includes conducting a flow of cement along a plurality of paths disposed between the implant and the bone and connected in communication with the recesses in the implant and the recesses in the bone.
71. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein a first portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between first and second recesses in the implant, a second portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between second and third recesses in the implant, a third portion of the surface area on the implant is disposed between the first and third recesses in the implant, a first portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between first and second recesses in the bone, a second portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between second and third recesses in the bone, and a third portion of the surface area on the bone is disposed between the first and third recesses in the bone, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant includes positioning the first portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the first portion of the surface area on the bone, positioning the second portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the second portion of the surface area on the bone, and positioning the third portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the third portion of the surface area on the bone.
72. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein a first portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a first recess in the implant, a second portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a second recess in the implant, a third portion of the surface area on the implant extends around an open end portion of a third recess in the implant, a first portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a first recess in the bone, a second portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a second recess in the bone, and a third portion of the surface area on the bone extends around an open end portion of a third recess in the bone, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant includes positioning the first portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the first portion of the surface area on the bone, positioning the second portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the second portion of the surface area on the bone, and positioning the third portion of the surface area on the implant in engagement with the third portion of the surface area on the bone.
73. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein recesses in the implant and recesses in the bone have open end portions of the same size and configuration, said step of positioning the implant on the bone with the surface area on the implant in engagement with the surface area on the bone at an interface between the bone and the implant includes positioning the implant with the open end portions of the recesses in the implant aligned with the open end portions of the recesses in the bone.
74. A method of securing an implant to bone comprising the steps of: placing a bone engagement portion of an implant adjacent a bone to form cement cells extending between the implant and the bone, said step of placing a bone engagement portion of an implant adjacent a bone includes providing an implant having a bone engagement portion for engagement with the bone and having surfaces defining a first plurality of cement compartments in the bone engagement portion, said step of placing a bone engagement portion of an implant adjacent a bone further includes making a second plurality of cement compartments in the bone and aligning the cement compartments in the bone engagement portion of the implant with the cement compartments in the bone; and placing cement in the cement cells to form plugs of cement extending between the implant and the bone, while preventing formation of a continuous slab of cement between the bone engagement portion of the implant and the bone.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
