Abstract
A multi-ply sealing ring and method of manufacturing same. Two annular members are nested one within the other and then welded together at equi-distant intervals to form a plurality of annular weld zones. The two annular members are then cut along the weld zones to form a plurality of multi-ply cylindrical bands having weld-sealed opposite axial ends. Each cylindrical band is then formed to include a sealing profile.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring, comprising the steps of: nesting a first annular member within a second annular member, the first and second annular members being coaxial and in intimate surface contact with each other along an interface therebetween; welding the first and second annular members together at equi-distant intervals, thus forming a plurality of annular weld zones; cutting the first and second annular members along the annular weld zones to form a plurality of multi-ply cylindrical bands, each having first and second, weld-sealed opposite ends; and forming each cylindrical band into a sealing profile.
2. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring according to claim 1, further comprising forming at least one vent hole in the annular member disposed on a side opposite a high pressure side of the sealing ring.
3. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring according to claim 1, further comprising cold working and smoothing the weld lines before cutting and after welding.
4. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring comprising the steps of: nesting a first annular member within a second annular member, the first and second annular members being coaxial and in intimate surface contact with each other, and having mutual opposite axial ends; welding the first and second annular members together at the opposite axial ends, thus forming a multi-ply cylindrical band; and forming the multi-ply cylindrical band into a seal.
5. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring comprising the steps of: nesting a first annular member within a second annular member, the first and second annular members being coaxial and in intimate surface contact with each other, and having mutual opposite axial ends; welding the first and second annular members together at the opposite axial ends, thus forming a multi-ply cylindrical band; and forming the multi-ply cylindrical band into a sealing profile, wherein prior to nesting, the method includes forming at least one vent hole in the annular member disposed on a side opposite a high pressure side of the sealing ring.
6. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring comprising the steps of: nesting a first annular member within a second annular member, the first and second annular members being coaxial and in intimate surface contact with each other, and having mutual opposite axial ends; welding the first and second annular members together at the opposite axial ends, thus forming a multi-ply cylindrical band; and forming the multi-ply cylindrical band into a V-shaped sealing profile.
7. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring comprising the steps of: nesting a first annular member within a second annular member, the first and second annular members being coaxial and in intimate surface contact with each other, and having mutual opposite axial ends; welding the first and second annular members together at the opposite axial ends, thus forming a multi-ply cylindrical band; and forming the multi-ply cylindrical band into a C-shaped sealing profile.
8. A method of manufacturing a sealing ring comprising the steps of: nesting a first annular member within a second annular member, the first and second annular members being coaxial and in intimate surface contact with each other, and having mutual opposite axial ends; welding the first and second annular members together at the opposite axial ends, thus forming a multi-ply cylindrical band; and forming the multi-ply cylindrical band into a convolution sealing profile.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
