Abstract

Designated thiophenesulfonamides are useful as herbicides and in particular in the control of broadleaf weeds.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A compound of the formula: ##STR107## wherein A is SO 2  N(R 3 )C(O)N(R 4 )R 5  ; R is C 1  -C 4  alkyl, C 3  alkenyl, OCH 3 , NO 2 , Cl, Br, SO 2  NR 1  R 2  and SO 2  N(OCH 3 )CH 3  ;   R 1  and R 2  are independently C 1  -C 3  alkyl;   R 3  is H or CH 3  ;   R 4  is H, CH 3  or OCH 3  ;   R 5  is ##STR108## X is H, Cl, Br, CH 3 , CH 2  CH 3 , C 1  -C 3  alkoxy, CF 3 , SCH 3 , CH 2  OCH 3 , OCH 2  CH═CH 2  or OCH 2  C.tbd.CH;   Y is CH 3  or OCH 3  ;   Z is N; and their agricultural salts; provided that     (a) A cannot be in the 4-position of the thiophene ring; and   (b) one of R 3  or R 4  must be H; and   (c) when A is in the 3-position and R is in the 2-position, then R is other than Cl, Br or CH 3 .   
     
     
       2. A compound of claim 1 wherein R 3  is H, and R 4  is H or CH 3 . 
     
     
       3. A compound of claim 2 wherein Q is O. 
     
     
       4. A compound of claim 3 with the formula ##STR109## 
     
     
       5. A compound of claim 3 with the formula ##STR110## 
     
     
       6. A compound of claim 3 with the formula ##STR111## 
     
     
       7. A compound of claim 4 wherein X is H, Cl, CH 3 , CH 2  CH 3 , OCH 3  or OCH 2  CH 3 . 
     
     
       8. A compound of claim 5 wherein X is H, Cl, CH 3 , CH 2  CH 3 , OCH 3  or OCH 2  CH 3 . 
     
     
       9. A compound of claim 6 wherein X is H, Cl, CH 3 , CH 2  CH 3 , OCH 3  or OCH 2  CH 3 . 
     
     
       10. A compound of claim 7 wherein R is CH 3 , NO 2 , Cl, Br or SO 2  N(CH 3 ) 2 . 
     
     
       11. A compound of claim 8 wherein R is CH 3 , NO 2 , Cl, Br or SO 2  N(CH 3 ) 2 . 
     
     
       12. A compound of claim 9 wherein R is CH 3 , Cl, Br or SO 2  N(CH 3 ) 2 . 
     
     
       13. The compound of claim 1 N-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-3-chloro-2-thiophenesulfonamide. 
     
     
       14. The compound of claim 1 N-[(4,6-dimethyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-3-chloro-2-thiophenesulfonamide. 
     
     
       15. The compound of claim 1 N-[(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-3-chloro-2-thiophenesulfonamide. 
     
     
       16. The compound of claim 1 N-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-3-bromo-2-thiophenesulfonamide. 
     
     
       17. The compound of claim 1 N-[(4,6-dimethyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-3-bromo-2-thiophenesulfonamide. 
     
     
       18. The compound of claim 1 N-[(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-3-bromo-2-thiophenesulfonamide. 
     
     
       19. A composition suitable for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises an effective amount of a compound of claim 1 and at least one of the following: surfactant, solid or liquid diluent. 
     
     
       20. A composition suitable for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises an effective amount of a compound of claim 2 and at least one of the following: surfactant, solid or liquid diluent. 
     
     
       21. A composition suitable for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises an effective amount of a compound of claim 3 and at least one of the following: surfactant, solid or liquid diluent. 
     
     
       22. A composition suitable for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises an effective amount of a compound of claim 4 and at least one of the following: surfactant, solid or liquid diluent. 
     
     
       23. A method for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises applying to the locus to be protected an effective amount of a compound of claim 1. 
     
     
       24. A method for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises applying to the locus to be protected an effective amount of a compound of claim 2. 
     
     
       25. A method for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises applying to the locus to be protected an effective amount of a compound of claim 3. 
     
     
       26. A method for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises applying to the locus to be protected an effective amount of a compound of claim 4.
