Abstract

Described are coating compositions having improved anti-static properties and particularly magnetic coating compositions suitable for magnetic recording media. The compositions comprise at least one film-forming synthetic resin and, based on coating solids, from about 0.2 to about 10% of an alkali, alkaline earth, ammonium or amine salt of a perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

       1. A magnetic composition suitable for magnetic recording media, said composition consisting essentially of magnetic particles and from about 0.2 to about 10% based on the weight of the particles of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine salt of a perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid having the formula CF 3 (CF 2 ) n SO 3 H or CF 3 (CF 2 ) n COOH where n is 0 to 5.

       2. The composition of claim 1 in which the magnetic particles are acicular iron oxide particles.

       3. The composition of claim 2 in which the salt is lithium.

       4. The composition of claim 3 in which the salt is the lithium salt of trifluoromethane sulfonic acid.

       5. A magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate coated with a magnetic layer comprising magnetic particles, a synthetic resin binder and from about 0.2 to about 10% based on the weight of the magnetic particles of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine salt of a perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid having the formula CF 3 (CF 2 ) n SO 3 H or CF 3 (CF 2 ) n COOH where n is 0 to 5.

       6. A process for improving the dispersibility characteristics and the electrical conductivity properties of magnetic particles suitable for magnetic recording media, which process comprises contacting said particles with from about 0.2 to about 10% based on the weight of the particles of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine salt of a perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid having the formula CF 3 (CF 2 ) n SO 3 H or CF 3 (CF 2 ) n COOH where n is 0 to 5.

       7. The process of claim 6 wherein the contacting is carried out by dry blending.

       8. The process of claim 6 wherein the contacting is carried out by blending the particles with an aqueous solution of said salt and then drying the blend.
