Abstract
Polyamides, prepared from aralkylenediamines, such as 5-phenyl-5-methyl-1,9-nonanediamine and dicarboxylic acids such as adipic or azelaic acid are tough, clear resins useful for molding and fibers.

1. As a composition of matter, a polyamide resin prepared by reacting at least one aralkylenediamine selected from the group consisting of: ##STR5## wherein each R' is an alkylene or alkylidene radical of at least one carbon atom; R" is an alkyl radical of at least one carbon atom; Ar is a divalent phenylene or naphthylene radical and said --Ar--Q contains 6 to 22 carbon atoms; and Q is selected from the group consisting of --H, --X, --R'", --N(R'") 2 , --NH 2 'HX, --OR'", --SH, --OH, and --SR'", wherein X is a halogen and is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine, and R'" is an alkyl radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; with at least one alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid of C 6 to C 16 carbon atoms per molecule, under reaction conditions suitable for forming said polyamide resin.
2. The polyamide resin according to claim 1 wherein said R' contains 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and said R" contains 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
3. The polyamide resin according to claim 2 wherein said --Ar--Q is phenyl, and said aralkylenediamines contain 15 to 21 carbon atoms per molecule.
4. The polyamide resin according to claim 3 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is terephthalic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, isophthalic acid, cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, or mixture thereof.
5. The polyamide resin according to claim 4 wherein said aralkylenediamine is 5-phenyl-5-methyl-1,9-nonanediamine.
6. The polyamide resin according to claim 5 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is terephthalic acid.
7. The polyamide resin according to claim 5 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is adipic acid.
8. The polyamide resin according to claim 5 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is sebacic acid.
9. The polyamide resin according to claim 5 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is isophthalic acid.
10. The polyamide resin according to claim 5 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid.
11. A process for preparing polyamides resin which comprises reacting at least one aralkylenediamine selected from the group consisting of: ##STR6## wherein each R' is an alkylene or alkylidene radical of at least one carbon atom, R" is an alkyl radical of at least one carbon atom, Ar is a divalent phenylene or naphthylene radical; and Q is selected from the group consisting of --H, --X, --R'", --N(R'") 2 , --NH 2 'HX, --OR'", --SH, --OH, and --SR'", wherein X is a halogen and is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine, and R'" is an alkyl radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and --Ar--Q contains 6 to 22 carbon atoms; with at least one alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid of C 6 to C 16 carbon atoms per molecule under reaction conditions effective for forming said polyamide resin.
12. The process according to claim 11 wherein said reaction conditions for preparation of said polyamide resin include reaction under an inert atmosphere, a reaction pressure of about 10 to 600 psig, and a reaction temperature of about 200° to 300° C.
13. The process according to claim 12 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is terephthalic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, isophthalic acid, cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, or mixture thereof.
14. The process according to claim 13 wherein said diamine is 5-phenyl-5-methyl-1,9-nonanediamine.
15. The process according to claim 14 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is terephthalic acid.
16. The process according to claim 14 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is adipic acid.
17. The process according to claim 14 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is sebacic acid.
18. The process according to claim 14 wherein said alpha, omega-hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid is isophthalic acid.
