Anorexic chromans

Abstract

Compounds within formula ##STR1## and their salts wherein X is alkylene of 2-4 carbon atoms; R 1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms; R 2 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms or benzyl, or R 1 and R 2 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a 5-, 6- or 7-membered saturated ring; R 3 is aryl; R 4 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms; and R 5 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms; have been found to possess mood-modifying and anorexia inducing activity.

We claim: 
     
       1. A compound of the formula: ##STR32## or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof wherein R 1  is hydrogen or alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms; R 2  is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R 7  is hydrogen, fluoro, chloro, trifluoromethyl or methoxyl; and R 8  is hydrogen. 
     
     
       2. A compound of the formula ##STR33## or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof wherein R 9  is hydrogen, fluoro, chloro, bromo, methyl, methoxyl or trifluoromethyl; R 10  is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; and R 11  is methyl or ethyl. 
     
     
       3. A compound according to claim 2 wherein NR 10  R 11  is methylamino. 
     
     
       4. A compound according to claim 2 wherein NR 10  R 11  is dimethylamino. 
     
     
       5. The compound according to claim 2 which is 2,2-dimethyl-7-methylaminoethoxy-4-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)chroman or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof. 
     
     
       6. The compound according to claim 2 which is 2,2-dimethyl-7-methylaminoethoxy-4-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)chroman or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof. 
     
     
       7. The compound according to claim 2 which is 2,2-dimethyl-7-dimethylaminoethoxy-4-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)chroman or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof. 
     
     
       8. The compound according to claim 2 which is 2,2-dimethyl-7-dimethylaminoethoxy-4-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)chroman or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
