Claims

Abstract

This invention relates to a system for photographing, presenting and viewing 3D images, in which a set of mutually extinguishing multichrome A and B filters in spectacles is utilized to cover a first eye with an "A" green filter and a second eye with a "B" magenta filter. The "A" greenfilter transmits at 450 to 580 nm and peaks about 515 to 540 nm. The "B" magenta filter absorbs from 475 nm to 575 nm. Standard color film may be utilized to photograph stereo image pairs of the object in which a first image is in green, and a second image is in red and/or blue. With this system, one eye transmits a first stereo image in green via retinal receptors to the brain and the other eye transmits a second stereo image in red and/or blue via other retinal receptors to another portion of the brain. Thus, the stereo images are separated according to their 3-dimensional displacements and color. The brain integrates the color and 3D information received by the two eyes to produce a full 3D color picture. The 3D color system of this invention is compatible with still and movie color photography, printing inks, and color 3D TV. For color 3D TV using a cathode ray tube color screen, the green dots display the first stereo image and the red and blue dots display the second stereo image. Another new set of "C" and "D" mutually extinguishing filters is described, which may be employed in lieu of the set of "A" and "B" filters.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed and sought to be protected by U.S. Letters Patent is: 
     
       1. In a system for presenting and viewing images in 3D color, means for presenting a first green color stereo image, said green color including the color yellow, and a second magenta color stereo image, said magenta color including the colors red and blue, complementary mutually extinguishing A and B filters, said first stereo image having only the green color wavelengths transmitted by the said A filter, and said second stereo image only the red-blue wavelengths transmitted by the said B filter, a spectacle frame in which said A and B filters are mounted, said A filter being a green colored sheet, said B filter a magenta colored sheet, whereby said first stereo colored image passes through said A filter in said frame, and not through said B filter in said frame, and said second stereo colored image passes through said B filter in said frame and not through said A filter in said frame, said green A filter transmitting between 450 and 580 nm with a peak between 515 and 450 nm, the combination of said A and B filters having less than 1% transmittance at any wavelength from 400 nm to 700 nm, whereby interocular color suppression and ghosting is avoided, and whereby the brain of the observer synthesizes said first and second images and colors to form a single 3D image in full color. 
     
     
       2. A system for presenting and viewing images in 3D color according to claim 1, in which said means is 3D color printing comprising a sheet, selected colored inks for A and B colors including the 4 colors, respectively, green and yellow A colors and red and blue B colors, the first stereo image being printed onto said sheet to reflect an A color and the second stereo image being printed onto said sheet to reflect a B color. 
     
     
       3. A 3D color system according to claim 2, in which said sheet is paper. 
     
     
       4. A system for presenting and viewing images in 3D color according to claim 1, said means comprising 3D color photography, a photographic sheet transparency, dye-colors on said photographic sheet having the 4 selected colors comprising green and yellow A colors and red and blue B colors respectively carrying a first stereo image and a second stereo image from said photographic sheet transparency. 
     
     
       5. A system for presenting and viewing images in 3D color according to claim 1, said means comprising a motion picture projector for projecting said images, a motion picture film strip of the conventional type containing colored images comprising first and second stereo images located one above the other in each single frame of said film strip, said first image being photographed in an A color and said second image being photographed in a B color, an optical device for overlapping the stereo image pairs upon the screen; a spectacle frame having mounted thereon said A and B filters; A and B filters mounted on said optical device, said motion picture images being projected through said A and B filters on said optical device, overlapped on said screen and viewed through said spectacles to resolve said image pairs upon the screen, and whereby the observer perceives a 3D color image. 
     
     
       6. A 3D motion picture projection system according to claim 5 in which said A and B filters on said optical device are interference filters. 
     
     
       7. A system for presenting and viewing TV images in 3D color according to claim 1, said means comprising a conventional TV color CRT having red, blue and green phosphors in which the first A stereo image is presented via the green phosphor, and in which the second B stereo image is presented via the red and/or blue phosphors.
