Abstract

Provided herein are rafter vents including a ventilated mat extending along a roof structure, the ventilated mat comprising a plurality of entangled filaments, and a backing adhered to the ventilated mat along a surface of the ventilated mat configured to face opposite the roof structure.

1 . A method, comprising:
 installing a rafter vent between adjacent roof joists of a roof structure, the rafter vent comprising a ventilated mat including a plurality of entangled filaments; and   after the rafter vent has been installed between the adjacent roof joists, installing insulation underneath the rafter vent and between the adjacent roof joists.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the rafter vent further includes a backing adhered to a first surface of the ventilated mat, wherein the first surface is oriented away from a roof deck attached to the adjacent roof joists; and   installing the insulation underneath the rafter vent comprises positioning the insulation to make contact with the backing.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein portions of the backing extend beyond parallel sides of the rafter vent to form flaps, and the method further comprises:
 securing the flaps to the adjacent roof joists.   
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein:
 the insulation comprises spray foam insulation,   the backing has a second surface and a third surface opposite the second surface, the second surface being adhered to the first surface of the ventilated mat, and   installing the insulation underneath the rafter vent comprises spraying the spray foam insulation against the third surface.   
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the rafter vent is included within a roll of rafter vent material, and the method further comprises:
 unrolling at least a portion of the roll of rafter vent material; and   trimming the portion to a length based on one or more dimensions of the roof structure.   
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein an end of the rafter vent is curved downward and the method further comprises coupling, to a top of a side exterior wall a building structure including the roof structure, the end of the rafter vent to form an integral dam. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the ventilated mat has a length of at least 48 inches and a width of either (i) 14 to 14.5 inches, to allow the ventilated mat to be positioned between the adjacent roof joists spaced at 16 inches on center, or (ii) 22 to 22.5 inches, to allow the ventilated mat to be positioned between roof joists spaced at 24 inches on center. 
     
     
         8 . A method, comprising:
 providing a rafter vent having a ventilated mat comprising a plurality of entangled filaments and a backing adhered to the ventilated mat along a first surface of the ventilated mat configured to face opposite a roof deck of a roof of a building structure;   attaching the rafter vent along the roof deck; and   trimming the rafter vent to form an end of the rafter vent extending beyond an exterior sheathing of the roof.   
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising:
 attaching the end of the rafter vent to the roof deck at an end location beyond the exterior sheathing of the roof, wherein the end of the rafter vent extends one to three inches beyond the exterior sheathing of the roof.   
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising:
 curving the end of the rafter vent downward onto a top of a side exterior wall of the building structure to form an integral end dam; and   adhering the end to the top of the side exterior wall.   
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein the end of the rafter vent extends three inches or more beyond the exterior sheathing of the roof. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising:
 attaching one or more additional ventilated mats between the rafter vent and the roof deck.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising:
 attaching an end dam to extend between the rafter vent proximate the end and a top of a side exterior wall of the building structure.   
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the rafter vent is attached along the roof deck at least in part by bonding the backing, the ventilated mat, or both to at least one of the roof deck, a roof truss, a rafter of the roof, a joist of the roof, or a combination thereof by one or more of chemical, thermal, or mechanical bonding. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the backing extends beyond an edge of the ventilated mat to form at least one flap. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein the rafter vent is attached along the roof deck at least in part by bonding the at least one flap to at least one of the roof deck, a roof truss, a rafter of the roof, a joist of the roof, or a combination thereof by one or more of chemical, thermal, or mechanical bonding. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising:
 after the rafter vent has been attached along the roof deck, installing insulation underneath the rafter vent.   
     
     
         18 . A method, comprising:
 installing a rafter vent between adjacent roof joists of a roof structure, the rafter vent comprising a ventilated mat including a plurality of entangled filaments and a backing adhered to a first surface of the ventilated mat, wherein the first surface is oriented away from a roof deck attached to the adjacent roof joists; and   after the rafter vent has been installed between the adjacent roof joists, installing insulation underneath the rafter vent and between the adjacent roof joists so that the insulation makes contact with the backing.   
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein portions of the backing extend beyond parallel sides of the rafter vent to form flaps, and the method further comprises:
 securing the flaps to the adjacent roof joists.   
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein:
 the insulation comprises spray foam insulation;   the backing has a second surface and a third surface opposite the second surface, the second surface being adhered to the first surface of the ventilated mat; and   
       installing the insulation underneath the rafter vent comprises spraying the spray foam insulation against the third surface.
