Abstract

A directional drilling tool for establishing and verifying the high-side orientation of downhole motors relative to measurement-while-drilling (MWD) systems. The tool comprises a fluorescent, lightweight, drillable plastic bracket with an arcuate body that snaps onto tubular components such as downhole motors and drill collars. A radially extending rod provides accurate visual alignment of the motor high side. The tool's flexible, non-hazardous material maintains attachment under rig-floor impacts while enhancing safety for personnel and downhole equipment. It is suitable for whipstock operations and other directional drilling procedures requiring reliable high-side reference.

1 . A directional drilling high side scribe tool (DDHST), comprising:
 a bracket including a body formed of a fluorescent plastic material,   wherein the body defines an arcuate segment extending between one-half and five-sixths of a full circle,   wherein the inner diameter of the bracket is smaller than the object to which it is snapped, and   wherein the bracket is configured to clamp onto an outer surface of the object along the arc segment.   
     
     
         2 . The directional drilling high side scribe tool of  claim 1 , further comprising a rod extending outwardly from the bracket along a radial direction relative to the arcuate segment. 
     
     
         3 . The directional drilling high side scribe tool of  claim 1 , wherein all materials forming the bracket and the rod are flexible materials having a density less than that of water. 
     
     
         4 . The directional drilling high side scribe tool of  claim 2 , wherein all materials forming the bracket and the rod are flexible materials having a density less than that of water.
