Abstract

A tamper-evident wine packaging system comprises a transparent, shrink-wrapped polymeric material that conforms tightly to a wine bottle, integrating irreversible thermochromic temperature indicators to signal exposure to temperatures outside preset thresholds. What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A tamper-evident wine packaging system for monitoring storage conditions, comprising:
 I. a shrink-wrapped polymeric material configured to tightly conform to the shape of a wine bottle, thereby enclosing the wine bottle within a protective layer;   II. wherein said shrink-wrapped polymeric material forms a tamper-evident seal around the wine bottle;   III. a first temperature indicator disposed on an exterior surface of said shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said first temperature indicator providing a visual signal when a temperature of the wine bottle exceeds a predetermined upper threshold; and   IV. a second temperature indicator disposed on the exterior surface of said shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said second temperature indicator providing a visual signal when the temperature of the wine bottle falls below a predetermined lower threshold.   
     
     
         2 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , wherein said shrink-wrapped polymeric material is formed from a transparent or translucent heat-shrinkable film. 
     
     
         3 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , wherein said shrink-wrapped polymeric material is applied to the wine bottle by placing the bottle in a sleeve of the material and applying heat to cause the material to shrink and conform tightly to the contours of the bottle. 
     
     
         4 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , wherein said first temperature indicator and said second temperature indicator each comprise a thermochromic material that undergoes an irreversible color change when exposed to temperatures outside of a predetermined acceptable range for wine storage. 
     
     
         5 . The wine packaging system of  claim 4 , wherein said thermochromic material is in the form of a strip or label adhered to the exterior surface of said shrink-wrapped polymeric material. 
     
     
         6 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , further comprising a shock or vibration sensor disposed on the exterior surface of said shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said shock or vibration sensor configured to provide a visual signal when the wine bottle has been subjected to potentially damaging impact or movement exceeding a preset threshold. 
     
     
         7 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , further comprising a humidity indicator disposed on the exterior surface of said shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said humidity indicator providing a visual signal when a humidity surrounding the wine bottle exceeds a predetermined threshold. 
     
     
         8 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , wherein said shrink-wrapped polymeric material conforms tightly to a body, shoulder, neck, and cap of the wine bottle. 
     
     
         9 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , wherein the transparent or translucent nature of said shrink-wrapped polymeric material allows for visual inspection of the wine bottle and its label while providing a tamper-evident seal and protection from environmental factors. 
     
     
         10 . The wine packaging system of  claim 1 , further comprising a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag positioned adjacent to the exterior surface of said shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said RFID tag encoding information about the wine stored within the packaging system and readable by an RFID scanner. 
     
     
         11 . A method for packaging and monitoring a wine bottle, comprising the steps of:
 I. placing the wine bottle within a sleeve of heat-shrinkable polymeric material;   II. applying heat to the sleeve, causing the polymeric material to shrink and conform tightly to the shape of the wine bottle, thereby enclosing the wine bottle within a protective layer and forming a tamper-evident seal;   III. disposing a first temperature indicator on an exterior surface of the shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said first temperature indicator providing a visual signal when a temperature of the wine bottle exceeds a predetermined upper threshold; and   IV. disposing a second temperature indicator on the exterior surface of the shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said second temperature indicator providing a visual signal when the temperature of the wine bottle falls below a predetermined lower threshold.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the heat-shrinkable polymeric material is transparent or translucent. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein said first temperature indicator and said second temperature indicator each comprise a thermochromic material that undergoes a irreversible color change when exposed to temperatures outside of a predetermined acceptable range for wine storage. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 11 , further comprising the step of disposing a shock or vibration sensor on the exterior surface of the shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said shock or vibration sensor configured to provide a visual signal when the wine bottle has been subjected to potentially damaging impact or movement exceeding a preset threshold. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 11 , further comprising the step of disposing a humidity indicator on the exterior surface of the shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said humidity indicator providing a visual signal when a humidity surrounding the wine bottle exceeds a predetermined threshold. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the shrink-wrapped polymeric material conforms tightly to a body, shoulder, neck, and cap of the wine bottle after the application of heat. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the transparent or translucent nature of the shrink-wrapped polymeric material allows for visual inspection of the wine bottle and its label while providing a tamper-evident seal and protection from environmental factors. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 11 , further comprising the step of positioning a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag adjacent to the exterior surface of the shrink-wrapped polymeric material, said RFID tag encoding information about the wine stored within the packaging system and readable by an RFID scanner. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein said predetermined upper threshold is approximately 25° C. and said predetermined lower threshold is approximately 7° C.
