Abstract
Golf balls having core formulations including polybutadiene, butyl rubber, or a blend thereof, and low surface coverage dimple patterns are disclosed. The combination of low surface coverage with particular rubber formulations helps to reduce the flight of the ball while also providing improved aerodynamic consistency and maintaining the appearance of a high-performance trajectory.

1 . A golf ball, comprising:
a core layer formed of a blend of polybutadiene rubber and butyl rubber, wherein the blend comprises a ratio of polybutadiene rubber to butyl rubber of 10:90 to 40:60, a cover layer disposed over the core layer, the cover layer comprising a dimple pattern disposed thereon, wherein the dimple pattern is a tetrahedral pattern comprising four substantially identical dimple sections, wherein the dimples in each of the four substantially identical dimple sections comprises a plurality of dimples having at least four different dimple diameters including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and at least two additional dimple diameters, wherein each of the at least four different dimple diameters range from 0.030 inches to 0.200 inches and the minimum dimple diameter is 0.050 inches to 0.090 inches, wherein the dimple pattern has a surface coverage of less than 40 percent.
2 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the blend comprises a ratio of polybutadiene rubber to butyl rubber of 30:70 to 40:60.
3 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a coefficient of restitution (COR) of 0.780 or less.
4 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a coefficient of restitution (COR) of 0.740 or less.
5 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the average of all the edge angles (θ μ ) is related to the surface coverage according to the following equation:

a core layer formed of a blend of polybutadiene rubber and butyl rubber, wherein the blend comprises polybutadiene rubber and butyl rubber in a ratio of 40:60 to 60:40, a cover layer disposed over the core layer, the cover layer comprising a dimple pattern disposed thereon, wherein the dimple pattern is a tetrahedral pattern comprising four substantially identical dimple sections, wherein the dimples in each of the four substantially identical dimple sections comprises a plurality of dimples having (i) at least four different dimple diameters including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and at least two additional dimple diameters, wherein each of the at least four different dimple diameters range from about 0.030 inches to about 0.200 inches, and (ii) substantially identical edge angles, wherein each of the four substantially identical dimple sections comprises a first shared dimple and a second shared dimple, wherein each of the first and second shared dimples has a centroid that intersects an edge of the dimple section, the first shared dimple has the maximum dimple diameter, and the second shared dimple has one of the additional dimple diameters, and wherein the plurality of dimples in the four substantially identical dimple sections covers less than 40 percent of the cover layer.
8 . The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the polybutadiene rubber has a 1,4 cis-bond content of greater than 90%.
9 . The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the golf ball has a coefficient of restitution (COR) of about 0.780 or less.
10 . The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the golf ball has a coefficient of restitution (COR) of about 0.740 or less.
11 . The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the average of all the edge angles (θ μ ) is related to the surface coverage according to the following equation:

a core layer formed of a blend of polybutadiene rubber and butyl rubber, wherein the blend comprises polybutadiene rubber and butyl rubber in a ratio of 40:60 to 60:40, a cover layer disposed over the core layer, the cover layer comprising a dimple pattern disposed thereon, wherein the dimple pattern is a tetrahedral pattern comprising four substantially identical dimple sections and each dimple section is defined by a spherical triangle, wherein the dimples in each of the four substantially identical dimple sections comprises a plurality of dimples having (i) at least four different dimple diameters including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and at least two additional dimple diameters, wherein each of the at least four different dimple diameters range from about 0.030 inches to about 0.200 inches, and (ii) substantially identical edge angles, wherein each of the four substantially identical dimple sections comprises a dimple centered on each vertex of the spherical triangle and the dimple has the maximum dimple diameter, and wherein the plurality of dimples in the four substantially identical dimple sections covers less than 40 percent of the cover layer.
14 . The golf ball of claim 13 , wherein the golf ball has a coefficient of restitution and the coefficient of restitution is related to the surface coverage according to the following equation:
