Knitted component with inserted elements

Abstract

An article of footwear includes a textile component forming at least a portion of an upper. The textile component includes a first textile layer and a second textile layer that are separable from one another to define a pocket between the layers. A cable is located at least partially within the pocket, and a plurality of cable guides are positioned within the pocket to contact and redirect the cable. Each cable guide includes a curved surface for contacting the cable, and the cable extends around the curved surfaces such that the cable changes direction within the pocket. In some embodiments, the pocket includes a tubular channel interconnecting the cable guides. The cable and cable guides are positioned proximate a perimeter edge of the textile component to provide a tensioning system that adjusts the fit of the upper without extending across a throat area of the footwear.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An article of footwear, comprising:
 an upper, comprising:   a textile component, comprising:
 a first textile layer, 
 a second textile layer, 
 a pocket formed between the first textile layer and the second textile layer, the pocket comprising a tubular structure; 
 a cable located at least partially within the pocket, and 
 a cable guide located at least partially within the pocket,
 wherein the cable guide comprises at least one curved surface, 
 wherein a first portion of the cable extends around the at least one curved surface such that the cable changes direction within the pocket, and 
 wherein a second portion of the cable is external to the cable guide and is located at least partially within the tubular structure; and 
 
   a sole structure secured to the upper.   
     
     
         2 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the first textile layer is secured to the second textile layer via a knit course extending along an edge of the pocket. 
     
     
         3 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the cable guide comprises a groove comprising the at least one curved surface. 
     
     
         4 . The article of footwear of  claim 3 , wherein the cable guide includes a deformable clip configured to retain the cable within the groove. 
     
     
         5 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first textile layer, the second textile layer, and the cable guide comprises a thermoplastic material, and wherein the thermoplastic material is at least partially fused to secure the cable guide to the textile component. 
     
     
         6 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the cable guide is a first cable guide, and wherein the textile component comprises a second cable guide and a third cable guide, wherein the cable extends in a serpentine pattern from the first cable guide to the second cable guide to the third cable guide, and wherein the serpentine pattern of the cable is contained between the first textile layer and the second textile layer of the textile component. 
     
     
         7 . The article of footwear of  claim 6 , wherein the first cable guide, the second cable guide, and the third cable guide are located on a first side of a throat area of the article of footwear such that the serpentine pattern of the cable remains on the first side of the throat area. 
     
     
         8 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , further comprising an actuator that is mechanically coupled to an exposed portion of the cable, wherein the actuator is configured to move the cable relative to the cable guide. 
     
     
         9 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein an exposed portion of the cable is exposed at an opening of the pocket located at a perimeter edge of the textile component. 
     
     
         10 . An article of footwear, comprising:
 an upper, comprising:   a textile component comprising a first textile layer and a second textile layer, wherein a pocket is located between the first textile layer and the second textile layer;   a cable located at least partially within the pocket; and   a plurality of cable guides located at least partially within the pocket,
 wherein each cable guide includes a curved surface, 
 wherein the cable extends around each curved surface of the plurality of cable guides such that the cable changes direction multiple times within the pocket, and 
 wherein the plurality of cable guides are arranged around a perimeter of the textile component; and 
   a sole structure secured to the upper.   
     
     
         11 . The article of footwear of  claim 10 , wherein the cable extends in a serpentine path adjacent to the perimeter of the textile component. 
     
     
         12 . The article of footwear of  claim 10 , wherein the cable extends adjacent to the perimeter edge on opposite sides of the upper. 
     
     
         13 . The article of footwear of  claim 12 , wherein the cable extends around a toe area of the upper to interconnect portions of the cable extending across opposite sides of the upper. 
     
     
         14 . The article of footwear of  claim 10 , wherein the cable extends from a heel area toward the toe area and back toward the heel area adjacent to the perimeter edge. 
     
     
         15 . An article of footwear, comprising:
 an upper, comprising:   a textile component comprising a first textile layer and a second textile layer, wherein a pocket is located between the first textile layer and the second textile layer;   a cable located at least partially within the pocket; and   a plurality of cable guides located at least partially within the pocket,
 wherein each cable guide includes a curved surface, 
 wherein the cable extends around each curved surface of the plurality of cable guides and through the pocket, and 
 wherein the cable follows a serpentine path along the plurality of cable guides. 
   
     
     
         16 . The article of footwear of  claim 15 , wherein the cable follows the serpentine path extending along one side of the upper. 
     
     
         17 . The article of footwear of  claim 15 , wherein the cable follows the serpentine path along both a medial side of the upper and a lateral side of the upper. 
     
     
         18 . The article of footwear of  claim 15 , wherein the cable crosses a toe portion of the upper. 
     
     
         19 . The article of footwear of  claim 15 , wherein the serpentine path of the cable extends from a heel area of the upper toward a toe area and back toward the heel area. 
     
     
         20 . The article of footwear of  claim 15 , wherein the cable begins on a first side of the upper, follows the serpentine path, and ends on a second side of the upper opposite to the first side.
