Modular metrics bar for an exercise machine

Abstract

A system includes an exercise machine and a computing device coupled to the exercise machine. The computing device presents a metrics bar within a graphical user interface in an initial state, detects a start of a first workout experience by a user on the exercise machine, retrieve a first set of metrics from stored user preferences data based on a workout experience type, workout type, and exercise machine type of the first workout experience, and displays the first set of metrics in a display area of the metrics bar during the first workout experience. The computing device detects a start of a second workout experience, determines a second set of metrics from the stored user preferences data based on a workout experience type, workout type, and exercise machine type of the second workout experience, and displays the second set of metrics in the metrics bar during the second workout experience.

         21 . A system comprising:
 an exercise machine; and   a computing device coupled to the exercise machine, the computing device comprising a display, memory, and a processor coupled to the memory, wherein the memory stores instructions that when executed by the processor causes the computing device to perform operations comprising:   detecting a start of a workout experience on the exercise machine;   presenting a metrics bar within a graphical user interface of the display during the workout experience on the exercise machine, the metrics bar comprising a display area configured to present a set of metrics associated with the workout experience;   presenting a metrics bar menu within the graphical user interface, the metrics bar menu comprising a plurality of selectable metrics associated with a type of the workout experience, a type of workout performed during the workout experience, and a type of the exercise machine;   receiving, during the workout experience, a request to modify the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar;   modifying the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar based on the request; and   displaying the modified set of metrics in the display area of the metrics bar during the workout experience.

The system of  claim 21 , wherein modifying the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar based on the request comprises adding one or more metrics selected from the metrics bar menu to the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar. 
     
     
         23 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein modifying the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar based on the request comprises removing one or more metrics from the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar.

The system of  claim 21 , wherein the metrics bar menu comprises a tabbed interface including a metrics tab comprising menu items corresponding to the plurality of selectable metrics, and a connectivity tab comprising a set of one or more external devices configured to collect measurement data during the workout experience, wherein the connectivity tab is configured to present option controls for receiving a request to connect to or disconnect from at least one of the external devices. 
     
     
         25 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the operations further comprise:
 retrieving, in response to detecting the start of the workout experience, the set of metrics from stored user preference data associated with a user, wherein the stored user preference data associates the set of metrics with the workout experience; and   updating the stored user preference data based on the request to modify the set of metrics, wherein the updated user preference data associates the modified set of metrics with the workout experience.   
     
     
         26 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the workout experience is a first workout experience, and the set of metrics is a first set of metrics associated with the first workout experience, wherein the operations further comprise:
 detecting a start of a second workout experience on the exercise machine, the second workout experience being of a different type than the first workout experience; and   presenting a second set of metrics in the display area of the metrics bar during the second workout experience, wherein the second set of metrics is different from the first set of metrics,   wherein a type of workout experience defines a mode of multimedia content presented on the graphical user interface during the workout experience.   
     
     
         27 . The system of  claim 26 , wherein the mode of multimedia content presented on the graphical user interface during the first workout experience or the second workout experience comprises a video. 
     
     
         28 . The system of  claim 26 , wherein the mode of multimedia content presented on the graphical user interface during the first workout experience or the second workout experience comprises a program tachometer. 
     
     
         29 . The system of  claim 26 , wherein detecting the start of the second workout experience comprises:
 detecting that a screen associated with the second workout experience is present within the graphical user interface; or   detecting that the user selects a button from the metrics bar or detecting movement of the user after conclusion of the first workout experience.   
     
     
         30 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the metrics bar further comprises a control area configured to present a set of user-operable controls, wherein the set of user-operable controls presented in the control area changes based on a state of the workout experience. 
     
     
         31 . One or more non-transitory computer-readable media comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause a computing system to perform operations comprising:
 detecting a start of a workout experience on an exercise machine;   presenting a metrics bar within a graphical user interface of a display during the workout experience, the metrics bar comprising a display area configured to present a set of metrics associated with the workout experience;   presenting a metrics bar menu within the graphical user interface, the metrics bar menu comprising a plurality of selectable metrics associated with a type of the workout experience, a type of workout performed during the workout experience, and a type of the exercise machine;   receiving, during the workout experience, a request to modify the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar;   modifying the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar based on the request; and   displaying the modified set of metrics in the display area of the metrics bar during the workout experience.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 31 , wherein modifying the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar based on the request comprises adding one or more metrics selected from the metrics bar menu to the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 31 , wherein modifying the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar based on the request comprises removing one or more metrics from the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 31 , wherein the metrics bar menu comprises a tabbed interface including a metrics tab comprising menu items corresponding to the plurality of selectable metrics, and a connectivity tab comprising a set of one or more external devices configured to collect measurement data during the workout experience, wherein the connectivity tab is configured to present option controls for receiving a request to connect to or disconnect from at least one of the external devices. 
     
     
         35 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 31 , wherein the operations further comprise:
 retrieving, in response to detecting the start of the workout experience, the set of metrics from stored user preference data associated with a user, wherein the stored user preference data associates the set of metrics with the workout experience; and   updating the stored user preference data based on the request to modify the set of metrics, wherein the updated user preference data associates the modified set of metrics with the workout experience.   
     
     
         36 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 31 , wherein the workout experience is a first workout experience, and the set of metrics is a first set of metrics associated with the first workout experience, wherein the operations further comprise:
 detecting a start of a second workout experience on the exercise machine, the second workout experience being of a different type than the first workout experience; and   presenting a second set of metrics in the display area of the metrics bar during the second workout experience, wherein the second set of metrics is different from the first set of metrics,   wherein a type of workout experience defines a mode of multimedia content presented on the graphical user interface during the workout experience.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 36 , wherein the mode of multimedia content presented on the graphical user interface during the first workout experience or the second workout experience comprises a video, the video comprising one of a streaming entertainment video, a fitness training video, or a simulation video. 
     
     
         38 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 36 , wherein the mode of multimedia content presented on the graphical user interface during the first workout experience or the second workout experience comprises a program tachometer. 
     
     
         39 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 36 , wherein detecting the start of the second workout experience comprises:
 detecting that a screen associated with the second workout experience is present within the graphical user interface; or   detecting that the user selects a button from the metrics bar or detecting movement of the user after conclusion of the first workout experience.   
     
     
         40 . A method of operating an exercise machine, the method comprising:
 detecting a start of a workout experience on the exercise machine;   presenting a metrics bar within a graphical user interface of a display during the workout experience, the metrics bar comprising a display area configured to present a set of metrics associated with the workout experience;   presenting a metrics bar menu within the graphical user interface, the metrics bar menu comprising a plurality of selectable metrics associated with a type of the workout experience, a type of workout performed during the workout experience, and a type of the exercise machine;   receiving, during the workout experience, a request to modify the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar;   modifying the set of metrics presented in the display area of the metrics bar based on the request; and   displaying the modified set of metrics in the display area of the metrics bar during the workout experience.
