Abstract
A sacrificial tool for plugging and abandoning a wellbore includes an overshot fishing tool configured to locate and sealingly engage an uphole end of a downhole tool stuck within the wellbore, the wellbore penetrating one or more subterranean formations, a tubing operatively coupled to and extending from the overshot fishing tool, and a liner hanger arranged at an upper end of the tubing. Cement pumped to the sacrificial tool via a conveyance is conveyed to the downhole tool and discharged from the downhole tool into an annulus defined between the downhole tool and an inner wall of the wellbore to isolate the one or more subterranean formations.

1 . A sacrificial tool for plugging and abandoning a wellbore, comprising:
an overshot fishing tool configured to locate and sealingly engage an uphole end of a downhole tool stuck within the wellbore, the wellbore penetrating one or more subterranean formations; a tubing operatively coupled to and extending from the overshot fishing tool; and a liner hanger arranged at an upper end of the tubing, wherein cement pumped to the sacrificial tool via a conveyance is conveyed to the downhole tool and discharged from the downhole tool into an annulus defined between the downhole tool and an inner wall of the wellbore to isolate the one or more subterranean formations.
2 . The sacrificial tool of claim 1 , wherein the downhole tool includes a severed downhole tubular, and wherein the overshot fishing tool locates and engages an uphole end of the severed downhole tubular.
3 . The sacrificial tool of claim 2 , wherein the overshot fishing tool provides:
a cylindrical housing sized to receive the uphole end of the severed downhole tubular; and one or more seals arranged within the cylindrical housing to sealingly engage the uphole end of the severed downhole tubular.
4 . The sacrificial tool of claim 1 , further comprising a running tool received within a polished bore receptacle of the tubing and operable to actuate the liner hanger and thereby secure the sacrificial tool within the wellbore.
5 . The sacrificial tool of claim 1 , wherein the cement forms a column of cement within the annulus that spans the one or more subterranean formations.
6 . The sacrificial tool of claim 5 , wherein the column of cement reaches the liner hanger within the annulus.
7 . The sacrificial tool of claim 1 , wherein the liner hanger is hydraulically actuated.
8 . The sacrificial tool of claim 1 , wherein the overshot fishing tool includes:
a housing having an interior surface; and one or more seals arranged on the interior surface to engage an outer surface of the downhole tool.
9 . The sacrificial tool of claim 8 , wherein the housing is a cylindrical housing.
10 . A sacrificial tool for plugging and abandoning a wellbore, comprising:
a tubing including a first end, a second end, and a first flow path extending between the first and second ends; a liner hanger coupled to the tubing; and an overshot fishing tool arranged at the first end of the tubing, the overshot fishing tool including a housing having an inner surface configured to receive an uphole end a downhole tool stuck in the wellbore and one or more seals arranged on the inner surface to seal against an exterior of the downhole tool to establish fluid communication between the first flow path of the tubing and a second flow path of the downhole tool.
11 . The sacrificial tool of claim 10 , further comprising a running tool received within a polished bore receptacle of the second end of the tubing, wherein the running tool is operable to actuate the liner hanger and thereby secure the sacrificial tool within the wellbore.
12 . The sacrificial tool of claim 10 , wherein the downhole tool includes a severed downhole tubular, and wherein the one or more seals engage an uphole end of the severed downhole tubular.
13 . The sacrificial tool of claim 10 , wherein the housing is a cylindrical housing.
14 . A method, comprising:
deploying a sacrificial tool into a wellbore after a downhole tool becomes stuck in the wellbore, the sacrificial tool including an overshot fishing tool and a liner hanger; landing the overshot fishing tool on the downhole tool stuck in the wellbore to establish fluid communication between the sacrificial tool and the downhole tool; setting the liner hanger after landing the overshot fishing tool on the downhole tool stuck in the wellbore; and circulating a cement through the sacrificial tool and the downhole tool to form a cement plug below the set liner hanger, thereby cementing the downhole tool and the overshot fishing tool within the wellbore and plugging a first portion of the wellbore downhole of the cement plug from a second portion of the wellbore uphole of the cement plug.
15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:
disengaging the sacrificial tool from a running tool prior to circulating the cement; and retrieving the running tool to the surface.
16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein landing the overshot fishing tool on the downhole tool includes engaging one or more seals of the overshot fishing tool with an outer surface of an uphole of the downhole tool received within the overshot fishing tool.
17 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:
disengaging the sacrificial tool from a running tool prior to circulating the cement, wherein the cement is circulated without pulling the running tool out of a polished bore receptacle of the sacrificial tool; and retrieving the running tool to the surface after circulating the cement.
18 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising severing a downhole tubular connected to the downhole tool prior to deploying the sacrificial tool into the wellbore to form a severed uphole end of the downhole tool, and wherein the sacrificial tool is landed on the severed uphole end.
19 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the cement plug is at least partially formed in a bore of a casing disposed in the wellbore, wherein the cement plug blocks flow through the bore of the casing.
