Latch collet including unique collet prop buttons
Abstract
Provided is a latch collet, a well system, and a method for forming a well system. The latch collet, in one aspect, includes a collet body, the collet body having a plurality of collet fingers. The latch collet, according to this aspect, further includes a collet prop button located on a radial interior of each of the plurality of collet fingers, the collet prop button configured to engage with a profile of a mandrel for running the latch collet downhole, and configured to be propped radially outward by the mandrel to cause torque buttons located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers to remain engaged with associated alignment profiles in a latch coupling when positioned at an acceptable position downhole.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A latch collet, comprising:
a collet body, the collet body having a plurality of collet fingers; and a collet prop button located on a radial interior of each of the plurality of collet fingers, the collet prop button configured to engage with a profile of a mandrel for running the latch collet downhole, and configured to be propped radially outward by the mandrel to cause torque buttons located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers to remain engaged with associated alignment profiles in a latch coupling when positioned at an acceptable position downhole.
2 . The latch collet as recited in claim 1 , wherein the collet prop button located on the radial interior of each of the plurality of fingers is a first collet prop button, and further including a second collet prop button located on the radial interior of each of the plurality of fingers.
3 . The latch collet as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first collet prop buttons and the second collet prop buttons are similarly shaped.
4 . The latch collet as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first collet prop buttons and the second collet prop buttons are located within a center 50 percent of the plurality of fingers.
5 . The latch collet as recited in claim 1 , further including torque buttons located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of collet fingers.
6 . The latch collet as recited in claim 5 , wherein a width (W TB ) of each of the torque buttons is within 10% of each other.
7 . The latch collet as recited in claim 6 , wherein each of the torque buttons includes multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart torque button portions.
8 . The latch collet as recited in claim 7 , wherein the torque button is a first torque button located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers, and further including a second torque button located on the radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers, wherein the width (W TB ) of each of the second torque buttons is within 10% of each other and the first torque buttons.
9 . The latch collet as recited in claim 8 , wherein each of the second torque buttons includes multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart second torque button portions.
10 . The latch collet as recited in claim 9 , wherein the multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart torque button portions and the multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart second torque button portions are at least partially axially offset from each other thereby forming a debris path.
11 . A well system, comprising:
a wellbore extending through one or more subterranean formations; wellbore casing located in the wellbore, the wellbore casing including a latch coupling; and a latch collet located in the wellbore and configured to engage with the latch coupling, the latch collet including:
a collet body, the collet body having a plurality of collet fingers; and
a collet prop button located on a radial interior of each of the plurality of collet fingers, the collet prop button configured to engage with a profile of a mandrel for running the latch collet downhole, and configured to be propped radially outward by the mandrel to cause torque buttons located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers to remain engaged with associated alignment profiles in a latch coupling when positioned at an acceptable position downhole.
12 . The well system as recited in claim 11 , wherein the collet prop button located on the radial interior of each of the plurality of fingers is a first collet prop button, and further including a second collet prop button located on the radial interior of each of the plurality of fingers.
13 . The well system as recited in claim 12 , wherein the first collet prop buttons and the second collet prop buttons are similarly shaped.
14 . The well system as recited in claim 12 , wherein the first collet prop buttons and the second collet prop buttons are located within a center 50 percent of the plurality of fingers.
15 . The well system as recited in claim 11 , further including torque buttons located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of collet fingers.
16 . The well system as recited in claim 15 , wherein a width (W TB ) of each of the torque buttons is within 10% of each other.
17 . The well system as recited in claim 16 , wherein each of the torque buttons includes multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart torque button portions.
18 . The well system as recited in claim 17 , wherein the torque button is a first torque button located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers, and further including a second torque button located on the radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers, wherein the width (W TB ) of each of the second torque buttons is within 10% of each other and the first torque buttons.
19 . The well system as recited in claim 18 , wherein each of the second torque buttons includes multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart second torque button portions.
20 . The well system as recited in claim 19 , wherein the multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart torque button portions and the multiple linearly aligned and spaced apart second torque button portions are at least partially axially offset from each other thereby forming a debris path.
21 . A method for forming a well system, comprising:
forming a wellbore through one or more subterranean formations; positioning wellbore casing in the wellbore, the wellbore casing including a latch coupling; and positioning a latch collet in the wellbore, the latch collet configured to engage with the latch coupling and including:
a collet body, the collet body having a plurality of collet fingers; and
a collet prop button located on a radial interior of each of the plurality of collet fingers, the collet prop button configured to engage with a profile of a mandrel for running the latch collet downhole, and configured to be propped radially outward by the mandrel to cause torque buttons located on a radial exterior of each of the plurality of fingers to remain engaged with associated alignment profiles in a latch coupling when positioned at an acceptable position downhole.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
