Abstract
The present invention is direct to a set of golf clubs comprising long irons, mid-irons and short irons. The invention contemplates the use of titanium for the main body portion and tungsten weight members coupled in a hollow cavity and a tungsten heel weight member coupled in a hosel cavity.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A golf club comprising a club head having a club head mass and:
a y-axis extending vertically through a face center of the club head and a Moment of Inertia about the y-axis and a z-axis extending vertically through a face center of the club head and a Moment of Inertia about the z-axis, a body comprising a heel, a toe, a topline, a sole, and a back wall being formed from a first titanium; a hosel coupled to the body being formed of a second titanium; a face insert coupled to the body to form a hollow cavity between the face insert and the back wall and being formed of third titanium and having a face insert mass, the face insert having a face insert thickness at the face center; a toe weight member formed of tungsten and is coupled in a lower, toe portion of the hollow cavity and has a toe weight member mass that comprises greater than 25% of the club head mass; a first heel weight member formed of tungsten and coupled in a heel portion of the hollow cavity and has a first heel weight member mass of greater than 20% of the club head mass; and a second heel weight member being located in a hosel cavity such that a shaft axis of the hosel intersects the second heel weight member below the hosel, the second heel weight member has a second heel weight member mass; wherein the first heel weight mass plus the second heel weight mass is greater than 25% of the club head mass.
2 . The golf club of claim 1 , the first titanium has a first ultimate tensile strength UTS 1 , the second titanium has a second ultimate tensile strength UTS 2 and the third titanium has a third ultimate tensile strength UTS 3 that conform to the following equation:
UTS 2 <(UTS 1 -20 ksi)<(UTS 3 −40 ksi).
3 . The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the toe weight member mass is greater than about 65 grams.
4 . The golf club of claim 3 , wherein the first heel weight member mass plus the second heel weight member mass is about the toe weight member mass.
5 . The golf club of claim 4 , wherein the first heel weight member mass plus the second heel weight member mass plus the toe weight member mass is greater than 50% of the club head mass.
6 . The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the Moment of Inertia about the y-axis is greater than 250 kg-mm 2 .
7 . The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the Moment of Inertia about the z-axis is greater than 275 kg-mm 2 .
8 . The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the club head has a center of gravity height from a ground plane CGy and a center of gravity depth from the face center CGz that is greater than or equal to 0.5*CGy.
9 . The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the club head has a blade length that is preferably greater than 82 mm and has a Moment of Inertia about the y-axis to blade length ratio that is greater than 3 kg-mm.
10 . A golf club comprising a club head having a club head mass and:
a y-axis extending vertically through a face center of the club head and a Moment of Inertia about the y-axis and a z-axis extending horizontally back through a face center of the club head and a Moment of Inertia about the z-axis, a body comprising a heel, a toe, a topline, a sole, and a back wall being formed from a first titanium; a hosel coupled to the body being formed of a second titanium; a face insert coupled to the body to form a hollow cavity between the face insert and the back wall and being formed of third titanium and having a face insert mass, the face insert having a face insert thickness at the face center; a toe weight member formed of tungsten and is coupled in a lower, toe portion of the hollow cavity and has a toe weight member mass that comprises greater than 25% of the club head mass; a first heel weight member formed of tungsten and coupled in a heel portion of the hollow cavity and has a first heel weight member mass of greater than 20% of the club head mass; and a second heel weight member being located in a hosel cavity such that a shaft axis of the hosel intersects the second heel weight member below the hosel, the second heel weight member has a second heel weight member mass; and wherein the first titanium has a first ultimate tensile strength UTS 1 , the second titanium has a second ultimate tensile strength UTS 2 and the third titanium has a third ultimate tensile strength UTS 3 that conform to the following equation:
