Broadhead
Abstract
The invention is directed to a broadhead for bowhunting that provides significant advantages for ethical and efficient kills, that may be tailored for different target animals. It is an aspect of the invention to provide a broadhead design with a narrow profile in flight and penetration and a large cutting surface length to weight ratio while transiting the target animal. The broadhead maximizes efficient use of the majority of the forward momentum energy and the stored kinetic energy from the bow or crossbow to the arrow shaft to humanely impact and quickly and ethically kill the targeted animal. This is achieved without decreasing the accuracy and maximum penetration and lethal cutting of the broadhead upon impact and as it passes through the target animal. The broadhead minimizes deflection and provides lethal cutting surfaces that are exposed at all times.

A broadhead comprising a body for coupling adjacent the top of an arrow shaft, the body formed as at least one plate having a thickness, width and length, the body forming at least one front blade and at least two side blades extending from the at least one front blade substantially parallel to one another and away from the front blade a predetermined length, with rear edges on the body extending from the at least two side blades to a stabilizing collar connecting the at least two side blades, with the interior of the body between the side blades providing an open region, and a mounting head is provided adjacent the at least one front blade at the top of the open region, wherein a shaft is insertable through the stabilizing collar to be attached to the mounting head such that the at least two side blades extend substantially parallel to the shaft and along the front portion of the shaft a predetermined distance when attached to the body.
2 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the shaft is an arrow shaft or a shaft of an adapter attached to an arrow shaft.
3 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the body has more than two side blades at spaced positions around the shaft.
4 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the front and at least two side blades are formed as razor edges.
5 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the length of the at least two side blades is variable.
6 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the width of the at least two side blades is variable.
7 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one front blade is formed with a point and edges extending from the point at an angle.
8 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one front blade is formed as a flat edge substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.
9 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the stabilizing collar slidably engages the shaft.
10 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the length of the at least one front blade is variable.
11 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the mounting head is configured to attach to an arrow shaft or adapter assembly attached to an arrow shaft.
12 . The broadhead according to claim 1 , wherein the blade length to weight ratio of the body is between 80 to 200%.
13 . An arrow, comprising: an arrow shaft having a top attachment end, and a broadhead having a body formed as at least one plate having a thickness, width and length, the body forming at least one front blade and at least two side blades extending from the at least one front blade substantially parallel to one another and away from the front blade a predetermined length, with rear edges on the body extending from the at least two side blades to a stabilizing collar connecting the at least two side blades, with the interior of the body between the side blades providing an open region, and a mounting head is provided adjacent the at least one front blade at the top of the open region, wherein the arrow shaft is insertable through the stabilizing collar to be attached to the mounting head such that the at least two side blades extend substantially parallel to the arrow shaft and along the front portion of the arrow shaft a predetermined distance when attached to the body.
14 . The arrow of claim 13 , wherein the body has more than two side blades at spaced positions around the shaft.
15 . The arrow of claim 13 , wherein the length of the at least two side blades is variable.
16 . The arrow of claim 13 , wherein the width of the at least two side blades is variable.
17 . The arrow of claim 13 , wherein the stabilizing collar slidably engages the arrow shaft at a spaced distance from the top attachment end.
18 . The arrow of claim 13 , wherein the blade length to weight ratio of the body is between 80 to 200%.
19 . A broadhead comprising a body having a thickness, width and length, the body forming at least one front blade and at least two side blades extending from the at least one front blade substantially parallel to one another and away from the front blade a predetermined length, the body including a stabilizing collar connecting the at least two side blades, with the interior of the body between the side blades providing an open region, and a mounting head is provided adjacent the at least one front blade at the top of the open region, wherein a shaft is insertable through the stabilizing collar to be attached to the mounting head.
