Article of footwear having a rand

Abstract

An article of footwear includes an outsole and an upper secured to the outsole and defining a foot-receiving cavity over the outsole. The article of footwear further includes a rand secured to an exterior surface of the upper; wherein the rand has a first end at a medial side of a heel region of the upper and a second end at a front of a forefoot region of the upper. The rand wraps around a rear of the upper from the first end to the second end, the rand extending along a lateral side of the upper from the first end to the second end.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An article of footwear comprising:
 an outsole;   an upper secured to the outsole and defining a foot-receiving cavity over the outsole; and   a midsole disposed within the foot-receiving cavity and having an upper peripheral edge;   wherein the outsole has an integral rand portion that wraps up along an exterior surface of the upper outward the midsole and extends above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole.   
     
     
         2 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the outsole has a sidewall portion and a bottom portion that are each integral with the integral rand portion as a one-piece component. 
     
     
         3 . The article of footwear of  claim 2 , wherein the sidewall portion wraps upward onto the exterior surface of the upper at a medial side of a forefoot region of the upper. 
     
     
         4 . The article of footwear of  claim 3 , wherein the sidewall portion wraps upward onto the exterior surface of the upper at a front of the forefoot region. 
     
     
         5 . The article of footwear of  claim 4 , wherein the sidewall portion has an upper edge with a notch at the medial side of the forefoot region of the upper. 
     
     
         6 . The article of footwear of  claim 5 , wherein an incline of a leading edge of the notch is steeper than an incline of a trailing edge of the notch. 
     
     
         7 . The article of footwear of  claim 6 , wherein a lowest extent of the notch is above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole. 
     
     
         8 . The article of footwear of  claim 2 , wherein the sidewall portion has an upper edge with a notch at a medial side of a forefoot region of the upper; and
 wherein the integral rand portion has an upper edge with a notch at a lateral side of the forefoot region of the upper.   
     
     
         9 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the integral rand portion has an upper edge with a notch at a lateral side of a forefoot region of the upper. 
     
     
         10 . The article of footwear of  claim 9 , wherein an incline of a leading edge of the notch is steeper than an incline of a trailing edge of the notch. 
     
     
         11 . The article of footwear of  claim 10 , wherein a lowest extent of the notch is above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole. 
     
     
         12 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein a first region of the integral rand portion at a medial side of the upper extends upward along the exterior surface of the upper above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole. 
     
     
         13 . The article of footwear of  claim 12 , wherein the first region is at a heel region of the upper. 
     
     
         14 . The article of footwear of  claim 13 , wherein the outsole has a sidewall portion and a bottom portion that are integral with the integral rand portion as a one-piece component;
 wherein the sidewall portion wraps upward onto the exterior surface of the upper at a forefoot region of the upper;   wherein an upper edge of the outsole is at the bottom portion of the outsole between the first region of the integral rand portion and the sidewall portion and is below the upper peripheral edge of the midsole.   
     
     
         15 . The article of footwear of  claim 12 , wherein a second region of the integral rand portion at a lateral side of the upper extends upward along the exterior surface of the upper above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole. 
     
     
         16 . The article of footwear of  claim 15 , wherein the second region is at each of a forefoot region of the upper, a midfoot region of the upper, and a heel region of the upper. 
     
     
         17 . The article of footwear of  claim 16 , wherein the second region of the integral rand portion has an upper edge with a notch at the lateral side of the forefoot region of the upper. 
     
     
         18 . The article of footwear of  claim 17 , wherein an incline of a leading edge of the notch is steeper than an incline of a trailing edge of the notch. 
     
     
         19 . The article of footwear of  claim 17 , wherein a lowest extent of the notch is above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole. 
     
     
         20 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the outsole has a sidewall portion and a bottom portion that are integral with the integral rand portion as a one-piece component;
 wherein the sidewall portion wraps upward onto the exterior surface of the upper at a medial side of a forefoot region of the upper;   wherein a first region of the integral rand portion at the medial side of the upper extends upward along the exterior surface of the upper above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole;   wherein a second region of the integral rand portion at a lateral side of the upper extends upward along the exterior surface of the upper above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole at each of the forefoot region of the upper, a midfoot region of the upper, and a heel region of the upper; and   wherein the outsole is entirely above the upper peripheral edge of the midsole except between the sidewall portion and the first region of the integral rand portion at the medial side of the upper.
