Electronic Devices With Finger Sensors
Abstract
An electronic device such as a head mounted device may have an inner display that displays an image for a user through lenses. Head-mounted support structures may be used to support the display and lenses. One or more external displays may be publicly viewable while the head-mounted device is being worn. The head-mounted support structures may have a front face on which an external display is mounted. One or more finger sensors that are configured to detect touch input, force input, and/or other input from an external object such as a user's finger may be included in the head-mounted device. A finger sensor may have an elongated shape that runs along a peripheral edge of an external display on the front face. Finger sensors may also be located on other portions of the support structures.

1 . A head-mounted device, comprising:
a head-mounted housing; a sensor located on the head-mounted housing; left and right displays supported by the head-mounted housing; left and right lenses through which the respective left and right displays are viewable from eye boxes, wherein the left and right lenses are separated by a distance; and an actuator configured to adjust the distance in response to input to the sensor.
2 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 1 wherein the head-mounted housing comprises metal.
3 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 1 wherein the head-mounted housing comprises upper and lower peripheral edges and wherein the sensor is located on the upper peripheral edge of the head-mounted housing.
4 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 3 further comprising a layer of glass extending between the upper and lower peripheral edges.
5 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 4 wherein the layer of glass is curved.
6 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 1 further comprising a head strap coupled to the head-mounted housing.
7 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 6 further comprising a finger sensor on the head strap.
8 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 7 wherein the finger sensor comprises a touch sensor.
9 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 1 further comprising an additional sensor on the head-mounted housing that is used to adjust audio volume.
10 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 9 wherein the additional sensor comprises a button.
11 . A head-mounted device, comprising:
a head-mounted housing; a display supported by the head-mounted housing; a lens through which the display is viewable from an eye box; a head strap coupled to the head-mounted housing; and a touch sensor on the head strap.
12 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 11 wherein the touch sensor comprises a capacitive touch sensor.
13 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 11 wherein the head-mounted housing has upper and lower edges, the head-mounted device further comprising a curved glass layer extending between the upper and lower edges.
14 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 13 further comprising a finger sensor on the upper edge of the head-mounted housing that is used to adjust an interpupillary distance.
15 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 13 further comprising a finger sensor on the upper edge of the head-mounted housing that is used to adjust audio volume.
16 . A head-mounted device, comprising:
a curved glass layer; a head-mounted housing that forms a ring-shaped border around the curved glass layer; displays and lenses supported by the head-mounted housing; and a volume button on the head-mounted housing.
17 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 16 wherein the head-mounted housing has upper and lower surfaces and wherein the volume button is located on the upper surface.
18 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 17 further comprising:
a finger sensor on the upper surface; and
an actuator configured to adjust a distance between the lenses in response to input to the finger sensor.
19 . The head-mounted device defined in claim 16 further comprising:
a head strap coupled to the head-mounted housing; and
a touch sensor on the head strap.
