Golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads
Abstract
Embodiments of golf club heads, golf clubs, and methods to manufacture golf club heads and golf clubs are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head includes a hollow body portion and a face portion coupled to the hollow body portion. The face portion includes a face toe edge, a face heel edge, a face top edge, and a face sole edge, a perimeter portion extending inward from the face toe edge, the face heel edge, the face top edge, and a face sole edge, and a plurality of face thickness regions bound by the perimeter portion and extending between the face sole edge and the face top edge. Each of the plurality of face thickness regions has a face thickness, and the face thickness increases in a sole-to-top direction. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A golf club head comprising:
a hollow body portion; a face portion coupled to the hollow body portion, the face portion comprising:
a face toe edge, a face heel edge, a face top edge, a face sole edge, a front surface, and a back surface;
a face thickness between the front surface and the back surface;
a perimeter portion extending inward from the face toe edge, the face heel edge, the face top edge, and a face sole edge; and
a plurality of face thickness regions bound by the perimeter portion and extending between the face sole edge and the face top edge;
wherein each of the plurality of face thickness regions has a different face thickness than the face thickness of an adjacent face thickness region, and wherein the face thickness increases in a sole-to-top direction.
2 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise semicircular-shaped regions of the face portion.
3 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise curved regions of the face portion.
4 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise horizontally extending regions of the face portion.
5 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face thickness of the perimeter portion is greater than the face thickness of each of the plurality of face thickness regions.
6 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a filler material in the hollow body portion, wherein the filler material comprises a density lower than a density of a material of the hollow body portion.
7 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a mass portion coupled to the hollow body portion, wherein the mass portion comprises a different material than a material of the hollow body portion.
8 . A golf club head comprising:
a hollow body portion; a face portion coupled to a front portion of the hollow body portion, the face portion comprising:
a face toe edge, a face heel edge, a face top edge, a face sole edge, a front surface and a back surface;
a face thickness between the front surface and the back surface;
a perimeter portion extending inward from the face toe edge, the face heel edge, the face top edge, and a face sole edge; and
a plurality of face thickness regions bound by the perimeter portion and extending between the face sole edge and the face top edge or between the face toe edge and the face heel edge; and
a plurality of face thickness transition portions,
wherein each face thickness region is separated from an adjacent face thickness region by a face thickness transition portion, wherein the face thickness of each face thickness region is different from the face thickness of an adjacent face thickness region, and wherein the face thickness of the perimeter portion is greater than the face thickness of each face thickness region.
9 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise a first face thickness region proximate to the face toe edge, a third face thickness region proximate to the face heel edge, and a second face thickness region between the first face thickness region and the third face thickness region.
10 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise a first face thickness region proximate to the face toe edge, a third face thickness region proximate to the face heel edge, and a second face thickness region between the first face thickness region and the third face thickness region, wherein the face thickness of the first face thickness region is greater than the face thickness of the third face thickness region, and wherein the face thickness of the second face thickness region transitions between the face thickness of the first face thickness region and the face thickness of the third face thickness region.
11 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise vertically extending regions of the face portion.
12 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise horizontally extending regions of the face portion.
13 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a filler material in the hollow body portion.
14 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a mass portion coupled to the hollow body portion, wherein the mass portion comprises a different material than a material of the hollow body portion.
15 . A golf club comprising:
a shaft having a first end and a second end; a grip coupled to the first end; a golf club head coupled to the second end, the golf club head comprising:
a hollow body portion;
a face portion coupled to a front portion of the hollow body portion, the face portion comprising:
a face toe edge, a face heel edge, a face top edge, a face sole edge, a front surface, and a back surface;
a face thickness between the front surface and the back surface;
a perimeter portion extending inward from the face toe edge, the face heel edge, the face top edge, and a face sole edge; and
a plurality of face thickness regions bound by the perimeter portion and extending between the face sole edge and the face top edge or the face toe edge and the face heel edge,
wherein the face thickness varies in a sole-to-top direction or a toe-heel direction.
16 . A golf club as defined in claim 15 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise semicircular-shaped regions of the face portion.
17 . A golf club as defined in claim 15 , wherein the plurality of face thickness regions comprise curved regions of the face portion.
