Resilient knitted component with wave features

Abstract

A knitted tongue for an article of footwear may include a ridge structure and a channel structure. The ridge structure is biased to curl about a first axis in a first direction toward a compacted position. The channel structure is biased to curl about a second axis in a second direction toward a compacted position. The first direction is opposite the second direction.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An article of footwear, comprising:
 a knitted component, comprising:   one or more wavy portions, each comprising:
 a first ridge structure and a second ridge structure, the first ridge structure and the second ridge structure biased to curl in a first direction and comprising a first yarn; and 
 a first channel structure located between the first ridge structure and the second ridge structure, the first channel structure biased to curl in a second direction and comprising a second yarn, 
 wherein the first yarn and the second yarn differ in at least one characteristic. 
   
     
     
         2 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises color. 
     
     
         3 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises texture. 
     
     
         4 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises elasticity. 
     
     
         5 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises denier. 
     
     
         6 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , wherein each wavy portion is configured to shift between a compacted position and an extended position. 
     
     
         7 . The article of footwear of  claim 6 , wherein, at least when the one or more wavy portions are in the compacted position, the one or more wavy portions provide cushioning. 
     
     
         8 . The article of footwear of  claim 6 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises color, the first yarn comprising a first color and the second yarn comprising a second color, and wherein, when the one or more wavy portions are in the compacted position, the first yarn and the first color are visible and the second yarn and the second color are hidden. 
     
     
         9 . The article of footwear of  claim 8 , wherein, when the one or more wavy portions are in the extended position, the first yarn and the first color are visible and the second yarn and the second color are visible. 
     
     
         10 . The article of footwear of  claim 1 , further comprising a bridge portion comprising a first end secured to the first ridge structure and a second end secured to the second ridge structure, wherein the bridge portion is excluded from a plurality of loops forming the one or more wavy portions. 
     
     
         11 . A knitted component, comprising:
 a plurality of wavy portions, each comprising:
 a first ridge structure and a second ridge structure, the first ridge structure and the second ridge structure each biased to curl in a first direction and comprising a first yarn; and 
 a first channel structure located between the first ridge structure and the second ridge structure, the first channel structure biased to curl in a second direction and comprising a second yarn, 
 wherein each wavy portion is configured to shift between a compacted position and an extended position, wherein, in the compacted position, the second yarn is hidden, and wherein, in the extended position, the second yarn in visible. 
   
     
     
         12 . The knitted component of  claim 11 , wherein the first yarn and the second yarn comprise different colors. 
     
     
         13 . The knitted component of  claim 11 , wherein the first yarn and the second yarn comprise different elasticities. 
     
     
         14 . The knitted component of  claim 11 , wherein the first yarn and the second yarn comprise different textures. 
     
     
         15 . The knitted component of  claim 11 , further comprising a bridge portion comprising a first end secured to the first ridge structure and a second end secured to the second ridge structure, wherein the bridge portion is excluded from a plurality of loops forming the plurality of wavy portions. 
     
     
         16 . An article of footwear, comprising:
 a knitted component, comprising:   a plurality of ridge structures each biased to curl in a first direction and comprising a first yarn; and   a plurality of channel structures positioned between the plurality of ridge structures, each channel structure biased to curl in a second direction and comprising a second yarn,   wherein the first yarn and the second yarn differ in at least one characteristic.   
     
     
         17 . The article of footwear of  claim 16 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises color, the first yarn comprising a first color and the second yarn comprising a second color. 
     
     
         18 . The article of footwear of  claim 17 , wherein the plurality of ridge structures can be shifted from a compacted position to an extended position, wherein, in the compacted position, the first color is visible and the second color is hidden, and wherein in the extended position, the first color is visible and the second color is visible. 
     
     
         19 . The article of footwear of  claim 18 , wherein the plurality of ridge structures and the plurality of channel structures are located on a tongue of the article of footwear. 
     
     
         20 . The article of footwear of  claim 16 , wherein the plurality of ridge structures and the plurality of channel structures provide cushioning to the knitted component.
