Sofa with Swivel Feature

Abstract

A repositionable sectional sofa comprises a base portion defining a first seating surface and a first forward direction, and a swivel portion defining a second seating surface and a second forward direction. A forward surface of the swivel portion is movable between a first configuration extending downwardly from a forward edge of the second seating surface and a second configuration extending outwardly from the second seating surface. The swivel portion is rotatable in relation to the base portion between a first position in which the first and second forward directions are parallel and a second position in which the first and second forward directions are non-parallel.

1 . A repositionable sectional sofa comprising:
 at least one base portion defining a first seating surface and a first forward direction;   at least one swivel portion defining:
 a second seating surface removably positionable contiguous to the first seating surface; 
 a second forward direction; and 
 a forward surface movable between a first configuration in which the forward surface extends downwardly from a forward edge of the second seating surface and a second configuration in which the forward surface extends outwardly from the second seating surface; 
   wherein the at least one swivel portion is rotatable in relation to the at least one base portion between a first position in which the first and second forward directions are parallel and a second position in which the first and second forward directions are non-parallel.   
     
     
         2 . The sectional sofa of  claim 1 , wherein contiguity of the first and second seating surfaces is maintained throughout rotation of the at least one swivel portion between the first and second positions. 
     
     
         3 . The sectional sofa of  claim 2 , wherein rotation of the at least one swivel potion in relation to the base portion is limited to between the first and second positions. 
     
     
         4 . The sectional sofa of  claim 3 , wherein the forward surface is reconfigurable between the first and second configurations throughout rotation of the at least one swivel potion in relation to the base portion between the first and second positions. 
     
     
         5 . The sectional sofa of  claim 4 , wherein the at least one base portion defines a first arcuate side surface extending vertically along a side edge of the first seating surface, the first arcuate side surface being shaped to mate with and conform to a second arcuate side surface defined by the at least one swivel portion. 
     
     
         6 . The sectional sofa of  claim 5 , wherein the at least one swivel portion rotates between the first and second positions about an axis defined by a radius of curvature of the second side surface. 
     
     
         7 . The sectional sofa of claim  7 , wherein the at least one swivel portion comprises a first swivel portion defining the second seating surface, the second forward direction, and the second arcuate side surface, and a second swivel portion defining a third seating surface and a third forward direction, the first and second swivel portions each being rotatable in relation to the base portion between a first position in which the first, second, and third forward directions are each parallel and a second position in which the first and third forward directions each form an acute angle to the second forward direction.

The sectional sofa of  claim 7 , wherein the at least one base portion defines a third arcuate side surface extending vertically along a side edge of the first seating surface opposite the first arcuate side surface, the third arcuate side surface being shaped to mate with and conform to a fourth arcuate side surface defined by the second swivel portion. 
     
     
         9 . The sectional sofa of  claim 8 , wherein the second swivel portion rotates between the first and second positions about an axis defined by a radius of curvature of the fourth side surface. 
     
     
         10 . The sectional sofa of  claim 9 , each of the first and second swivel portions being carried by a reclining mechanism comprising a plurality of linkages configured to drive movement of the corresponding forward surface between the first and second configurations and a swivel unit configured to carry the corresponding swivel portion in rotation between the first and second positions. 
     
     
         11 . The sectional sofa of  claim 10 , each reclining mechanism configured to limit rotation of the corresponding swivel portion between the first and second positions. 
     
     
         12 . The sectional sofa of  claim 11 , each swivel unit further comprising at least one stop configured to limit rotation of the corresponding swivel portion between the first and second positions. 
     
     
         13 . The sectional sofa of  claim 12 , wherein each swivel portion further defines a seat back, and wherein the plurality of linkages is further configured to drive movement of the corresponding seat back between an upright position and a reclined position. 
     
     
         14 . The sectional sofa of  claim 13 , wherein the plurality of linkages is further configured such that movement of the corresponding seat back to the reclined position results in tilting the corresponding seating surface. 
     
     
         15 . The sectional sofa of  claim 10 , each reclining mechanism being fixedly securable to an adjacent base portion.
