Abstract

A golf ball coating system and method where the golf ball coating system is comprised of a primary and secondary coating where the primary coating is over the entire surface of the golf ball or just the dimple area and the secondary coating is on the land area of the golf ball, on top of the primary coating or the prepared land area of the golf ball and the method for coating the golf ball is comprised of roll coating the at least secondary coating over the primary coating by rolling the golf ball through a polymeric fluid in a contained area and curing the secondary coating on the primary coating on the land area or prepared land area.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A golf ball comprising: at least a primary coating and a secondary coating where the primary coating is in the dimple area and the secondary coating is on the land area and where the primary coating and the secondary coating are discontinuous.

2 . The primary coating of claim 1 where the primary coating is mostly in the dimple area of the golf ball.

3 . The secondary coating of claim 1 where the secondary coating is mostly on the land area of the golf ball.

4 . The golf ball of claim 1 where there is also a tertiary and quaternary discontinuous coating on the outer surface of the golf ball.

5 . A method for coating a golf ball comprising: rolling a golf ball through a constrained area and where a polymeric fluid is in the constrained area such that the polymeric fluid is transferred to the surface of the golf ball.

6 . The method of claim 5 where the constrained area is a trough or a pipe and where the trough or the pipe is at an angle such that the golf ball will roll through the trough or pipe and allow the polymeric fluid to be transferred to the golf ball.

7 . The method of claim 5 where the primary coating is transferred to the golf ball by the polymeric fluid.

8 . The method of claim 5 where the secondary coating is transferred to the golf ball by the polymeric fluid.

9 . The method of claim 5 where the polymeric fluid is controlled to different levels to apply different thickness coatings to the golf ball surface.

10 . A method for coating a golf ball comprising: applying a primary coating to the golf ball and then removing the land area of the coating via chemical or physical means such as solvent or centerless grinding and then applying a secondary coating to the land area of the golf ball.

11 . A golf ball coating comprising: particles in a secondary, tertiary, or quaternary coating on the surface of the golf ball.

12 . The golf ball coating of claim 11 where the particles have a lower hardness than the coating material.

13 . The coating material of claim 11 where the particles have a higher hardness than the coating material.

14 . The coating material of claim 11 where the particles are hydrophilic hydrogels.
