Abstract

A wad for a shotgun cartridge is provided, the wad comprising: a wall defining a cavity therein for holding a projectile, the wall having a first end having an opening and a second end; a base member having a first end and a second end, the base member being disposed at the first end of the wall and closing the opening at the first end of the wall; wherein the base member is moveable relative to the wall between a first position and a second position, movement of the base member from the first position to the second position expanding a portion of the wall adjacent the first end of the wall. A shotgun cartridge is provided, the cartridge comprising: a head comprising a primer; a sleeve extending from the head having a distal end; a charge of explosive powder disposed within the head adjacent the primer; a wad as provided, the wad disposed within the sleeve on the opposite side of the power with the base member towards the head and the second end of the wall towards the distal end of the sleeve; and a projectile disposed within the cavity of the wad.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A wad for a shotgun cartridge, the wad comprising:
a wall defining a cavity therein for holding a projectile, the wall having a first end having an opening and a second end; a base member having a first end and a second end, the base member being disposed at the first end of the wall and closing the opening at the first end of the wall; wherein the base member is moveable relative to the wall between a first position and a second position, movement of the base member from the first position to the second position expanding a portion of the wall adjacent the first end of the wall.

2 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein, in the second position, the first end of the base member is disposed within the cavity.

         3 - 18 . (canceled)

19 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein, in the first position, the first end of the base member is disposed within the cavity.

20 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein, in the first position, the second end of the base member is disposed outside the cavity.

21 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein the first end of the base member has a diameter that is no greater than a diameter of the cavity at the first end of the wall.

22 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the first end of the base member is less than the diameter of the second end of the base member.

23 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein the second end of the base member has a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the cavity at the first end of the wall.

24 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein the base member comprises an outer surface extending between the first end and the second end, the diameter of at least a portion of the outer surface increasing in the direction from the first end to the second end of the base member.

25 . The wad according to claim 24 , wherein the diameter of at least a portion of the outer surface increases stepwise or continuously.

26 . The wad according to claim 24 , wherein the outer surface comprises a tapered portion extending from the second end towards the first end of the base member.

27 . The wad according to claim 1 , wherein the movement of the base member relative to the wall is limited.

28 . The wad according to claim 27 , wherein the base member comprises a protrusion, the protrusion engaging with the wall when the base member is in the second position, thereby limiting movement of the base member relative to the wall.

29 . The wad according to claim 28 , wherein the protrusion is spaced from the wall when the base member is in the first position.

30 . The wad according to claim 28 , wherein the protrusion is at the second end of the base member and engages with the end of the wall when the base member is in the second position.

31 . The wad according to claim 28 , wherein the protrusion comprises a radially outward extending flange.

32 . The wad according to claim 31 , wherein the flange has a diameter that is substantially the same as the outer diameter of the first end of the wall.

         33 . A cartridge comprising:
a head comprising a primer; a sleeve extending from the head having a distal end; a charge of explosive powder disposed within the head adjacent the primer, a wad according to claim 1 , the wad disposed within the sleeve on the opposite side of the power with the base member towards the head and the second end of the wall towards the distal end of the sleeve; and a projectile disposed within the cavity of the wad.

34 . A method of operating a shotgun, the method comprising:
loading a cartridge according to claim 33 into the chamber of the shotgun; and firing the shotgun.
