Aerosol generation

Abstract

Described herein is an aerosol generating assembly comprising an aerosol generating substrate and a heater which is configured to heat but not burn the aerosol generating material. The aerosol generating substrate comprises an aerosol generating material, the aerosol generating material comprising an amorphous solid. The amorphous solid comprises 1-60 wt % of a gelling agent, 0.1-50 wt % of an aerosol generating agent, and 0.1-80 wt % of a flavor, wherein these weights are calculated on a dry weight basis.

1 . An aerosol generating substrate comprising an aerosol generating material, the aerosol generating material comprising an amorphous solid, the amorphous solid comprising:
 1-60 wt % of a gelling agent; and   0.1-50 wt % of an aerosol generating agent;   
       wherein these weights are calculated on a dry weight basis. 
     
     
         2 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein the amorphous solid further comprises 0.1-80 wt % of a flavor calculated on a dry weight basis. 
     
     
         3 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein the amorphous solid is a hydrogel and comprises less than about 15 wt % of water calculated on a wet weight basis. 
     
     
         4 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein the gelling agent comprises a hydrocolloid. 
     
     
         5 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 4 , wherein the hydrocolloid comprises one or more compounds selected from the group comprising alginates, cellulose derivatives, gums, silica or silicones compounds, clays and combinations thereof. 
     
     
         6 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 5 , wherein the amorphous solid comprises a calcium-crosslinked alginate and/or a calcium-crosslinked pectin. 
     
     
         7 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein the amorphous solid additionally comprises an active substance. 
     
     
         8 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 7 , wherein the amorphous solid comprises powdered tobacco and/or nicotine and/or a tobacco extract. 
     
     
         9 . The aerosol generating substrate of  claim 1 , wherein the amorphous solid comprises no tobacco material but does comprise nicotine. 
     
     
         10 . The aerosol generating substrate of  claim 9 , wherein the aerosol generating material consists of the amorphous solid. 
     
     
         11 . The aerosol generating substrate of  claim 10 , wherein the amorphous solid is in the form of a shredded sheet. 
     
     
         12 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 2 , wherein the flavor comprises menthol. 
     
     
         13 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein the amorphous solid is formed as a sheet. 
     
     
         14 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 13 , wherein the sheet has a mass per unit area of 80-120 g/m 2 . 
     
     
         15 . The aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generating material has a mass per unit area of from 30 to 120 g/m 2 . 
     
     
         16 . An aerosol generating assembly comprising the aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1  and a heater which is configured to heat but not burn the aerosol generating material. 
     
     
         17 . An aerosol generating assembly according to  claim 13 , wherein the amorphous solid is provided in the aerosol generating device in sheet form or as a shredded sheet. 
     
     
         18 . An aerosol generating article for use in an aerosol generating assembly, the article comprising the aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 . 
     
     
         19 . A method of making the aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 1 , the method comprising (a) forming a slurry comprising components of the amorphous solid or precursors thereof, (b) forming a layer of the slurry, and (c) setting the slurry to form a gel, and (d) drying to form the amorphous solid. 
     
     
         20 . A method of making the aerosol generating substrate according to  claim 12 , the method comprising:
 (a) providing the menthol as molten menthol;   (b) combining the molten menthol with the gelling agent, the aerosol generating agent and solvent to form a slurry;   (c) forming a layer of the slurry;   (d) setting the slurry to form a gel; and   (e) drying the gel to form the amorphous solid.
