Embedded instructions for voice user interface

Abstract

Methods and systems for rendering lists of instructions and performing actions associated with those lists are described herein. In some embodiments, an individual may request that a voice activated electronic device associated with their user account assist in performing a task using a list of instructions. The list of instructions may include metadata that indicates actions capable of being performed by additional Internet of Things (“IoT”) devices. When the instructions are rendered, an instructions speechlet may recognize the metadata and may cause one or more of the IoT devices to perform a particular action. Furthermore, the metadata may also correspond to content capable of being rendered by the voice activated electronic device to assist the individual in performing a particular step of the instructions.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:
 receiving a user request for a recipe;   accessing inventory data for a storage unit from a storage database;   selecting a recipe based on at least the inventory data;   causing a first device to send command data related to the recipe to a second device resulting in the second device performing a first action related to the recipe corresponding to the command data; and   causing the first device to output information corresponding to a second action related to the recipe to be performed.   
     
     
         2 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 1 , wherein the first device includes the storage unit. 
     
     
         3 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 2 , wherein the first device comprises a refrigerator. 
     
     
         4 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 1 , wherein the second device comprises a smart oven. 
     
     
         5 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 4 , wherein the command data related to the recipe that is sent to the smart oven includes a command to preheat the smart oven, resulting in preheating of the smart oven. 
     
     
         6 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 1 , wherein the inventory data includes data about amounts of stored ingredients potentially needed for a recipe. 
     
     
         7 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises a smartphone. 
     
     
         8 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises a cooktop. 
     
     
         9 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises one or more cameras. 
     
     
         10 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 1 , wherein the user request for a recipe is an utterance. 
     
     
         11 . A system, comprising:
 at least one processor; and   at least one memory comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:
 receive a user request for a recipe; 
 access inventory data for a storage unit from a storage database; 
 select a recipe based on at least the inventory data; 
 cause a first device to send command data related to the recipe to a second device resulting in the second device performing a first action related to the recipe corresponding to the command data; and 
 cause the first device to output information corresponding to a second action related to the recipe to be performed. 
   
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein the first device includes the storage unit. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 12 , wherein the first device comprises a refrigerator. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein the second device comprises a smart oven. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 14 , wherein the command data related to the recipe that is sent to the smart oven includes a command to preheat the smart oven, resulting in preheating of the smart oven. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein the inventory data includes data about amounts of stored ingredients potentially needed for a recipe. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein the first device comprises a smartphone.
