Abstract
A method and system for calibrating an electronic range finding device to a specific firing device and specific projectile, wherein the range finding device comprises a display, wherein the method comprises aiming the range finding device at a first mark and adjusting a dynamically positioned indicator at a second mark, wherein the range finding device is calibrated to a specific firing device and specific projectile, whereby the range finding device provides information about the projectile trajectory path. The system uses the true calibration for a specific firing device, such as a bow, crossbow, rifle, or tank, to select a ballistic table and display accurate projectile trajectory information including an aiming point and an indication of whether or not the projectile has a clear shot to a target.

2 . The method of claim 1 ,
wherein the display comprises concentric icon squares, and wherein the dynamically positioned indicator is a relative aiming point indicator, the method comprising the steps of: a) placing a relative target at a first shot distance, aiming a calibrated sight or scope, and firing the projectile making a first shot mark, wherein the relative target comprises concentric target squares, b) placing the relative target at a second shot distance, aiming the calibrated sight or scope, and firing the projectile making a second shot mark, c) placing the range finding device in calibration setup mode, d) visually aligning concentric target squares in an image with concentric icon squares, e) selecting the first shot distance, f) adjusting the relative aiming point indicator to visually match the first shot mark, g) selecting the second shot distance, and h) adjusting the relative aiming point indicator to visually match the second shot mark.
3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising a step of selecting a sight in, or zeroed at, distance.
4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising the steps of:
placing the relative target at a third shot distance, aiming the calibrated sight or scope, and firing the projectile making a third shot mark, selecting the third shot distance, and adjusting the relative aiming point indicator to visually match the third shot mark.
5 . The method of 2 , wherein after calibration, and after determining a range to a target, the range finding device positions the relative aiming point indicator to indicate to a user a relative aiming point for the target.
6 . The method of claim 1 ,
wherein the display comprises crosshairs and a plurality of trajectory path indicators positioned above the crosshairs, wherein the dynamically positioned indicator is an aiming point indicator, and wherein a sight is adjusted to a specific bow and type of arrow, the method comprising the steps of: a) marking a point on a field target at a target range using a pin on the sight corresponding to the predetermined intermediate range while aiming the sight at the field target using a second pin on the sight corresponding to the target range, b) aiming the crosshairs at the field target, and c) in calibration mode, adjusting the location of the trajectory path indicator to match the marked point.
7 . The method of claim 1 ,
wherein the display comprises crosshairs and a plurality of trajectory path indicators positioned above the crosshairs, wherein the dynamically positioned indicator is an aiming point indicator, and wherein a sight is adjusted to a specific bow and type of arrow, the method comprising the steps of: a) aiming the sight using a first pin on the sight at a calibration sheet having a first calibration mark corresponding to the first pin and a second calibration mark above the first calibration mark corresponding to a second pin on the sight, b) moving forward or backward until the second pin aligns with the second calibration mark, c) aiming the crosshairs of the display at the first calibration mark, and d) in calibration mode, adjusting the location of the trajectory path indicator to match the second calibration mark.
8 . The method of claim 1 ,
wherein the information about the projectile trajectory path is an aiming point.
9 . A system comprising range finding device of claim 1 , the range finding device further comprising:
a) a computing element, and b) a memory connected to the computing element, wherein the memory contains a plurality of ballistic tables, wherein when the range finding device is calibrated to a specific firing device and specific projectile, one of the plurality of ballistic tables is matched to the specific projectile, and wherein the matched table is used to determine and display an aiming point to a ranged target.
10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the range finding device further comprising a digital camera.
11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the display is a high-resolution digital display.
12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the crosshairs are located centrally in the display, said crosshairs indicating the line of sight to the target, and
wherein the trajectory path indicator is displayed above the crosshairs.
13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the system indicates to a user a clear shot along the projectile trajectory to the target,
whereby the user is informed regarding whether or not a obstacle is in the projectile trajectory.
14 . The method of claim 2 ,
wherein the information about the projectile trajectory path is an aiming point.
15 . The method of claim 6 ,
wherein the information about the projectile trajectory path is an aiming point.
16 . The method of claim 2 , wherein when the range finding device is calibrated to a specific firing device and specific projectile,
wherein one of a plurality of ballistic tables stored in the range finding device is matched to the specific projectile, and wherein the matched table is used to determine and display an aiming point to a ranged target.
17 . The method of claim 6 , wherein when the range finding device is calibrated to a specific firing device and specific projectile,
wherein one of a plurality of ballistic tables stored in the range finding device is matched to the specific projectile, and wherein the matched table is used to determine and display an aiming point to a ranged target.
18 . A system for indicating to a user a projectile trajectory to a target, the system comprising:
a) a computing element for determining the projectile trajectory, b) a display having a dynamically displayed trajectory path indicator and cross hairs, and c) a memory connected to the computing element, wherein the display is connected to the computing element, where the system is calibrated to a specific firing device and specific projectile, wherein one of a plurality of ballistic tables stored in the memory is matched to the specific projectile, and wherein the matched table is used to determine and display an aiming point to a ranged target, wherein the displayed trajectory path indicator indicates a height of the projectile trajectory at a predetermined intermediate range to the target, whereby the display provides information about the projectile trajectory path.
