Golf club head aft body construction

Abstract

An aft body of a golf club head and method of manufacturing the aft body is shown. The aft body has a composite crown and sole and separately formed skirt between the crown and sole. The method of manufacturing the aft body includes thermoforming the crown and sole and subsequently injection molding the skirt.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A golf club head comprising:
 a face portion having a striking face; and   an aft body located rearward of said face portion;   said aft body comprising:
 a crown portion; 
 a sole portion opposite said crown portion; and 
 a skirt portion formed between an outer perimeter portion of said crown portion and an outer perimeter portion of said sole portion, 
   wherein a face center of said striking face defines an origin of a coordinate system, said coordinate system having an x-axis extending in a heel-to-toe direction, a y-axis extending in a crown-to-sole direction and perpendicular to said x-axis, and a z-axis extending in a front-to-rear direction and perpendicular to said x-axis and said y-axis, and   wherein at least a portion of said aft body is made of polycarbonate, polysulfone, polyethersulfone, polyphenylsulfone, polyethylenimine, or polyether ether ketone.   
     
     
         2 . The golf club head of  claim 1 , wherein said at least a portion of said aft body is made of polyethersulfone. 
     
     
         3 . The golf club head of  claim 2 , wherein said at least a portion of said aft body is said skirt portion. 
     
     
         4 . The golf club head of  claim 2 , wherein said crown portion and said sole portion have a thickness between 0.3 mm and 1.0 mm. 
     
     
         5 . The golf club head of  claim 2 , wherein said sole portion has a thickness greater than said crown portion. 
     
     
         6 . The golf club head of  claim 5 , wherein said sole portion has a thickness between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm and said crown portion has a thickness between 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm. 
     
     
         7 . A golf club head comprising:
 a face portion having a striking face; and   an aft body located rearward of said face portion;   said aft body comprising:
 a crown portion; 
 a sole portion opposite said crown portion; and 
 a skirt portion formed between an outer perimeter portion of said crown portion and an outer perimeter portion of said sole portion, 
   wherein a face center of said striking face defines an origin of a coordinate system, said coordinate system having an x-axis extending in a heel-to-toe direction, a y-axis extending in a crown-to-sole direction and perpendicular to said x-axis, and a z-axis extending in a front-to-rear direction and perpendicular to said x-axis and said y-axis, and   wherein said crown portion has a thickness between 0.3 mm and 1.0 mm.   
     
     
         8 . The golf club head of  claim 7 , wherein at least a portion of said aft body is made of polycarbonate, polysulfone, polyethersulfone, polyphenylsulfone, polyethylenimine, or polyether ether ketone. 
     
     
         9 . The golf club head of  claim 8 , wherein said at least a portion of said aft body is made of polyethersulfone. 
     
     
         10 . The golf club head of  claim 9 , wherein said sole portion has a thickness greater than said crown portion. 
     
     
         11 . The golf club head of  claim 10 , wherein said sole portion has a thickness between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm and said crown portion has a thickness between 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm. 
     
     
         12 . The golf club head of  claim 11 , wherein said at least a portion of said aft body is said skirt portion.
