Handgun improvement device
Abstract
A thumbrest for a handgun is provided, the thumbrest having at least a thumb support and a support base. The support base may be configured for mounting to the handgun. The thumb support may be pivotably movable with respect to the support base or a lateral side of a handgun frame, pivoting between a collapsed position, wherein the thumb support may be folded up adjacent to, or in contact with, the support base or the lateral side of the handgun frame, and an extended position, wherein the thumb support may be pivoted away from the support base or the lateral side of the handgun frame. In other embodiments, a spring may be configured to bias the thumb support toward the extended position, and a stop structure may be configured to limit pivotal movement of the thumb support, such that liming pivotal movement of the thumb support defines the extended position.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A thumbrest for a handgun, the thumbrest comprising:
a generally planar support base; and a thumb support pivotable relative to the support base between a collapsed position wherein the thumb support is folded up adjacent to the support base and an extended position wherein the thumb support is pivoted away from the support base.
2 . The thumbrest of claim 1 , further comprising:
an elongated support member configured to replace a handgun slide lock, the elongated support member having a longitudinal axis; and wherein the support base is coupled to an end of the elongated support member, the support member extending generally orthogonally to the longitudinal axis of the elongated support member.
3 . The thumbrest of claim 2 , further comprising:
a lever pivotably coupled to the elongated support member.
4 . The thumbrest of claim 3 , wherein:
the lever is coupled to the elongated support member via a fastener such that the lever may pivot about the longitudinal axis of the elongated support member.
5 . The thumbrest of claim 4 , wherein:
the support base includes a sideplate extension extending substantially perpendicular relative to the longitudinal axis of the elongated support member; and at least a portion of the lever is positioned between the sideplate extension and the elongated support member.
6 . The thumbrest of claim 5 , wherein:
a hole defined in the sideplate extension, a hole defined in the lever, and a hole defined in the elongated support member are aligned such that the fastener is received through the hole of the sideplate extension, hole of the lever, and the hole of the elongated support member.
7 . The thumbrest of claim 5 , wherein:
the sideplate extension contains an upper limiting edge and a lower limiting edge positioned on either side of the lever, the upper and lower limiting edges configured to limit pivotal movement of the lever relative the sideplate extension.
8 . The thumbrest of claim 3 , wherein:
the support base includes a support brace, the support brace being generally planar and extending orthogonally to a lower edge of the support base, the support brace configured to engage a portion of a handgun frame such that the support base and elongated support member are fixed relative the handgun frame.
9 . The thumbrest of claim 3 , wherein:
the lever is configured to selectively engage a handgun slide.
10 . The thumbrest of claim 9 , wherein:
the lever is configured to lock the handgun slide in a rearward position when the lever engages the handgun slide.
11 . The thumbrest of claim 10 , wherein:
the lever is configured to be acted upon by a portion of a handgun magazine and lock the slide in a rearward position in response thereto.
12 . A handgun, the handgun comprising:
a handgun frame; a handgun grip attached to the handgun frame and configured to be gripped by a trigger hand of a shooter; a thumbrest supported from the handgun frame adjacent to a lateral side of the handgun frame opposite from the trigger hand of the shooter, the thumbrest including:
an elongated support member configured to replace a handgun slide lock, the elongated support member having a longitudinal axis;
a support base coupled to an end of the elongated support member, the support base being generally planar and extending generally orthogonally to the longitudinal axis of the elongated support member;
a thumb support pivotable relative to the support base between a collapsed position wherein the thumb support is folded up adjacent to the support base and an extended position wherein the thumb support is pivoted away from the support base, the thumb support configured in the extended position to be engaged by a thumb of a non-trigger hand of the shooter in a two-handed grip of the handgun; and
a lever pivotably coupled to the elongated support member.
13 . The handgun of claim 12 , wherein:
the lever is coupled to the elongated support member via a fastener such that the lever may pivot about the longitudinal axis of the elongated support member.
14 . The handgun of claim 13 , wherein:
the support base includes a sideplate extension extending substantially perpendicular relative to the longitudinal axis of the elongated support member; and at least a portion of the lever is positioned between the sideplate extension and the elongated support member.
15 . The handgun of claim 14 , wherein:
a hole defined in the sideplate extension, a hole defined in the lever, and a hole defined in the elongated support member are aligned such that the fastener is received through the hole of the sideplate extension, hole of the lever, and the hole of the elongated support member.
16 . The handgun of claim 14 , wherein:
the sideplate extension contains an upper limiting edge and a lower limiting edge positioned on either side of the lever, the upper and lower limiting edges configured to limit pivotal movement of the lever relative the sideplate extension.
17 . The handgun of claim 12 , wherein:
the support base includes a support brace, the support brace being generally planar and extending orthogonally to a lower edge of the support base, the support brace configured to engage a portion of the handgun frame such that the support base and elongated support member are fixed relative the handgun frame.
18 . The handgun of claim 12 , wherein:
the lever is configured to selectively engage a handgun slide.
19 . The handgun of claim 18 , wherein:
the lever is configured to lock the handgun slide in a rearward position wherein the lever engages the handgun slide.
20 . The handgun of claim 19 , wherein:
the lever is configured to be acted upon by a portion of a handgun magazine and lock the handgun slide in the rearward position in response thereto.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
