Abstract
Embodiments of golf club heads having adjustable weighting systems with a plurality of discrete attachment locations capable of receiving one or more weights are described herein. The golf club heads described herein provide user adjustability of club head center of gravity to adjust ball flight while maintaining a high moment of inertia and low and back center of gravity position.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A golf club head comprising:
a club head body having a toe end; a heel end located opposite the toe end; a crown; a sole located opposite the crown; a strike face; a perimeter positioned at a junction between the crown and the sole extending from near the heel end to near the toe end; a recessed portion defined by the sole, the perimeter, or a combination thereof; and an adjustable weighting system, wherein:
a first surface, a second surface disposed opposite the first surface, and a third surface that extending perpendicular between the first and second surface define the recessed portion;
the adjustable weighting system is positioned in the recessed portion and includes a plurality of discrete attachment locations;
each of the plurality of discrete attachment locations includes an attachment means and is configured to receive a weight; wherein:
the weight is selectively removeable and attachable to each of the plurality of discrete attachment locations, thereby to shift a center of gravity of the golf club head;
the plurality of discrete attachment points is located to position the weight are positioned a minimum distance from the center of gravity, wherein the minimum distance is measured as the distance from the center of gravity of the weight to the center of gravity of the club head body configured without the weight, and where the minimum distance is 1.0 inch; and
a combined moment of inertia of the club head about the club head center of gravity, defined as the sum of the crown-to-sole moment of inertia and a heel-to-toe moment of inertia, is greater than 8,000 g·cm 2 .
2 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of discrete attachment locations comprises three discrete attachment locations.
3 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the recessed portion extends in an arcuate manner from near the toe end to near the heel end following the contour of a trailing edge of the golf club head.
4 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the recessed portion has a depth measured along a direction that is normal to the third surface of at most 1.0 inch.
5 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the recessed portion has a depth measured along a direction that is normal to the third surface of between most 0.1 inch to 0.4 inch.
6 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the recessed portion has a depth that is variable along its length from the toe end to the heel end.
7 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the first surface extends parallel to the second surface.
8 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the third surface includes a first and a second protruding ridge that extend along more than half the length of the recess, wherein the lengths of the recess including a first and second protruding ridge define areas about which a weight cannot be attached, subsequently defining the discrete attachment locations.
9 . The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein the first and second protruding ridges comprise mass thereby increasing peripheral weighting to shift the center of gravity lower and farther back and to increase club head moment of inertia.
10 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the recessed portion has a width measured as the distance between the first surface and the second surface that is less than 2.0 inches.
11 . A golf club head comprising:
a club head body having a toe end; a heel end located opposite the toe end; a crown; a sole located opposite the crown; a strike face; a perimeter positioned at a junction between the crown and the sole extending from near the heel end to near the toe end; a recessed portion located on the trailing edge; and an adjustable weighting system, wherein:
the recessed portion includes a recessed surface that runs substantially parallel to the sole and a wall extending between the recessed surface and the sole;
the adjustable weighting system is positioned in the recessed portion and includes a plurality of discrete attachment locations;
the plurality of discrete attachment locations includes an attachment means and is configured to receive a weight; wherein:
the weight is selectively removeable and attachable to each of the plurality of discrete attachment locations, thereby to shift a center of gravity of the golf club head;
the plurality of discrete attachment points is located to position the weight are positioned a minimum distance from the center of gravity, wherein the minimum distance is measured as the distance from the center of gravity of the weight to the center of gravity of the club head body configured without the weight, and where the minimum distance is 1.0 inch; and
a combined moment of inertia of the club head about the club head center of gravity, defined as the sum of the crown-to-sole moment of inertia and a heel-to-toe moment of inertia, is greater than 8,000 g·cm 2 .
12 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of discrete attachment locations comprises three discrete attachment locations.
13 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the recessed portion extends in an arcuate manner from near the toe end to near the heel end generally following the contour of a trailing edge of the golf club head.
14 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the recessed portion has a depth measured as the distance from the recessed surface to the sole in a direction perpendicular to the recessed surface of at most 1 inch.
15 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the recessed portion has a depth measured as the distance from the recessed surface to the sole in a direction perpendicular to the recessed surface of between 0.1 inches and 0.4 inches.
16 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the recessed portion has a depth that is variable along its length from the toe end to the heel end.
17 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the recessed portion has a width measured as the distance between the wall and the trailing edge of the club head that is between 0.3 inches and 0.7 inches.
18 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the recessed portion has a width measured as the distance between the wall and the trailing edge of the club head that is between 0.7 inches and 1.1 inches.
19 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the weight comprises a rectangular, circular, triangular, trapezoidal, or polygonal shape.
20 . The golf club head of claim 11 , further comprising an additional weight selectively attachable to each of the plurality of discrete attachment locations; and
each of the weight and the additional weight has an equal size and shape so that each of the weight and the additional weight are interchangeably attachable to each of the plurality of discrete attachment locations.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
