Abstract

A building system is disclosed comprising a beam and column connection particularly suited for mass timber buildings. A first connection arrangement comprises a projection and slot arrangement with the beam being supported on an upwardly facing bearing surface. A second connection arrangement may be provided to tie the column to the beam. The system also discloses arrangements to accommodate greater tolerance at the connection and to provide an ability to accommodate limited rotation under dynamic loading.

. A building system according to claim 73 , wherein the beam column connection further comprises a second connection arrangement to tie the beam to the column.

. A building system according to claim 74 , wherein the second connection arrangement comprises a least one latch member that interconnects the first coupling to the intermediate member.

. A building system according to claim 75 , wherein the intermediate member and first coupling include preformed holes which are arranged to align on forming the first connection to form a passage in which the at least one latch member is arranged to locate to interconnect the first coupling to the intermediate member.

. A building system according to claim 76 , wherein the preformed holes in one of the intermediate member and first coupling is slotted to accommodate limited rotation and/or displacement between the beam and the column by relative movement of the at least one projection within the at least one slot.

. A building system according to claim 75 , wherein the at least one latch member is in the form of a dowel pin.

. A building system according claim 73 , wherein the at least one projection is in the form of a plate.

. A building system according to claim 79 , wherein the column extends generally along an axis and the at least one plate and slot of the first connection arrangement are generally aligned in the direction of the column axis when in interfitting relation.

. A building system according to claim 73 , wherein the intermediate member is fitted within a pocket disposed in the column and spaced from an upper end of the column.

. A building system according to claim 73 , wherein the intermediate member is in the form of a reaction block.

. A building system according to claim 73 , wherein the first coupling further comprises a body portion having opposite upper and lower ends and is fixed to the beam at an attachment region, the attachment region having an inner surface that abuts the beam, the inner surface including profiling to engage with the beam to distribute shear force across the attachment region.

. A building system according to claim 83 , wherein the attachment region is disposed in the lower half of the body portion.

. A building system according to claim 73 , wherein the beam is formed of mass timber and includes a timber panel reinforcement glued at the beam region having the edge face arranged to be in opposing relation with the column, the grain of the timber panel reinforcement being perpendicular to the grain along the length of the beam.

. A building system comprising a beam column connection, at least one of the beam or column being formed of mass timber, the beam having a region having an edge face arranged to be in opposing relation with the column, and the column having an upwardly facing bearing surface on which the beam is supported and at least one slot, the beam column connection comprising:
a first connection arrangement comprising a first coupling having a body portion comprising a first portion having an inner face and outer face extending between opposite upper and lower ends, the first portion being fixed to the beam with the inner face abutting the beam edge, a second portion having a downwardly facing bearing surface that supports the beam on the upwardly bearing face of the column; and at least one web extends between the first and second body portions and being received within the slot; and a second connection arrangement to tie the beam to the column.
