Claims

Abstract

A honing apparatus for producing a precision surface on a workpiece is disclosed. The honing apparatus includes a shank having a first zone positioned at substantially proximity to a distal end of the shank and a second zone positioned at substantially centre of said shank. The first zone has a rough grit diamond than the second zone. The honing apparatus includes a centering section positioned at the distal end of the shank. The shank connects to a honing machine via an adapter. The shank axially advances towards an area on a workpiece to be precision finished, while rotating and reciprocating relative to the workpiece to be precision surfaced. The centering section centers and aligns the shank at the workpiece such that the workpiece comes in contact with the first zone followed by the second zone. The first zone and the second zone remove a stock of material from the workpiece for precision surface on the workpiece.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A honing apparatus, comprising;
 a shank;   a first zone positioned at substantially proximity to a distal end of said shank;   a second zone positioned at substantially centre of said shank, wherein said first zone has a rough grit diamond than said second zone; and   a centering section positioned at said distal end of said shank,   wherein said shank connects to a honing machine via an adapter, wherein said shank axially advances towards an area on a workpiece to be precision surfaced, while rotating and reciprocating relative to said workpiece to be precision surfaced, wherein said centering section centers and aligns said shank at said workpiece such that said workpiece comes in contact with said first zone followed by said second zone, and wherein said first zone and said second zone remove a stock of material from said workpiece for precision surface on said workpiece.   
     
     
         2 . The honing apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein said first zone has a rough grit diamond and removes the stock of material of approximately 0.1 millimetre from said workpiece. 
     
     
         3 . The honing apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein said second zone has a rough grit diamond and removes the stock of material of approximately 0.02 to 0.0006 millimetre from said workpiece. 
     
     
         4 . The honing apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein said shank comprises a third zone, and wherein said third zone has a fine grit diamond than said second zone. 
     
     
         5 . The honing apparatus of  claim 4 , wherein said third zone positions adjacent to said second zone and comes in contact with said workpiece followed by said second zone when said shank axially advances towards said workpiece. 
     
     
         6 . The honing apparatus of  claim 5 , wherein said second zone has a medium grit diamond and removes the stock of material of about 0.02 millimetre from said workpiece, and wherein said third zone has a fine grit diamond and removes the stock of material of about 0.0006-0.0013 millimetre from said workpiece for precision surface on said workpiece. 
     
     
         7 . The honing apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein said first zone and said second zone are spaced apart at a distance from one another. 
     
     
         8 . The honing apparatus of  claim 4 , wherein said second zone and said third zone are spaced apart at a distance from one another. 
     
     
         9 . The honing apparatus of  claim 4 , wherein said first zone has a larger diameter than said centering section, wherein said second zone has a larger diameter than said first zone, and wherein said third zone has a larger diameter than said second zone. 
     
     
         10 . The honing apparatus of  claim 4 , wherein each of said first zone, said second zone and said third zone comprises tapered sections, and wherein said tapered sections facilitate to align an axis of said honing apparatus with said workpiece. 
     
     
         11 . A honing apparatus, comprising;
 a shank;   a first zone positioned at substantially proximity to a distal end of said shank;   a second zone positioned at substantially centre of said shank, wherein said first zone has a rough grit diamond than said second zone;   a third zone positioned adjacent to said second zone, wherein said third zone has a fine grit diamond than said second zone; and   a centering section positioned at said distal end of said shank,   wherein said shank connects to a honing machine via an adapter, wherein said shank axially advances towards an area on a workpiece to be precision surfaced, while rotating and reciprocating relative to said workpiece to be precision surfaced, wherein said centering section centers and aligns said shank at said workpiece such that said workpiece comes in contact with said first zone followed by said second zone and said third zone, and wherein said first zone, said second zone and said third zone remove a stock of material from said workpiece for precision surface on said workpiece.   
     
     
         12 . The honing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein said first zone has a rough grit diamond and removes the stock of material of about 0.1 millimetre from said workpiece. 
     
     
         13 . The honing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein said second zone has a medium grit diamond and removes the stock of material of about 0.02 millimetre from said workpiece. 
     
     
         14 . The honing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein said third zone has a fine grit diamond and removes the stock of material of about 0.0006-0.0013 millimetre from said workpiece. 
     
     
         15 . The honing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein said first zone, said second zone and said third zone are spaced apart at a distance from one another. 
     
     
         16 . The honing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein each of said first zone, said second zone and said third zone comprises tapered sections, and wherein said tapered sections facilitate to align an axis of said honing apparatus with said workpiece. 
     
     
         17 . A method of providing a honing apparatus, said method comprising the steps of;
 providing a shank;   providing a first zone positioned at substantially proximity to a distal end of said shank;   providing a second zone positioned at substantially centre of said shank, said first zone having a rough grit diamond than said second zone;   providing a centering section positioned at said distal end of said shank;   connecting said shank to a honing machine via an adapter;   axially advancing said shank towards an area on a workpiece to be precision finished, while rotating and reciprocating relative to said workpiece to be precision surfaced;   centering and aligning said centering section of said shank at said workpiece such that said workpiece comes in contact with said first zone followed by said second zone; and   removing a stock of material using said first zone and said second zone from said workpiece for precision surface on said workpiece.   
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising providing a third zone adjacent to said second zone, wherein said third zone has a fine grid diamond than said second zone, wherein said third zone comes in contact with said workpiece followed by said second zone when said shank axially advances towards said workpiece. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising placing each of said first zone, said second zone and said third zone at a distance from one another. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising:
 providing said first zone having a larger diameter than said centering section;   providing said second zone having a larger diameter than said first zone; and   providing said third zone having a larger diameter than said second zone.
