Claims

Abstract

An electronic device displays a plurality of user interface elements in accordance with values of an associated plurality of output properties that define output attributes of respective user interface elements; and detects a user input directed to a first user interface element, including detecting changes to one or more input parameters that describe the user input. The device modifies a first output property value of the first user interface element based on one or more behavior models that are driven by one or more input parameters of the user input; if the user interface meets first operation criteria (e.g., the first output property value of the first user interface element is above a first threshold), performs a first operation; and if the user interface meets second operation criteria (e.g., the first output property value of the first user interface element is below the first threshold), performs a second operation.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of determining operations to be performed in a user interface, comprising: at an electronic device with a display and a touch-sensitive surface:
 displaying, on the display, the user interface, the user interface including a plurality of user interface elements that are displayed in accordance with values of an associated plurality of output properties that define output attributes of respective user interface elements in the plurality of user interface elements;   detecting a user input on the touch-sensitive surface, including detecting changes to one or more of a plurality of input parameters that describe the user input, wherein the user input is directed to a first user interface element in the plurality of user interface elements; and   in response to detecting the user input:
 modifying a first output property value of the first user interface element based on one or more behavior models that are driven by one or more input parameters of the user input; 
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets first operation criteria, wherein the first operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is above a first threshold, performing a first operation in the user interface; and 
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets second operation criteria, wherein the second operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is below the first threshold, performing a second operation in the user interface that is different from the first operation. 
   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , including, in response to detecting the user input:
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets third operation criteria, wherein the third operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is above a second threshold, performing a third operation in the user interface.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , including, in response to detecting the user input:
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets fourth operation criteria, wherein the fourth operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is below a third threshold, performing a fourth operation in the user interface that is different from the first operation.   
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the method includes, in response to detecting the user input:
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets fifth operation criteria, wherein the fifth operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is above a fourth threshold, performing a fifth operation in the user interface that is different from the first operation.   
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , including determining a respective operation to perform in the user interface in accordance with the first output property value of the first user interface element without regard to values of the plurality of input parameters of the user input. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , including, in response to detecting the user input, updating the user interface based on the modified first output property value of the first user interface element. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 displaying the user interface includes displaying an application user interface;   the first operation includes displaying a multitasking user interface; and   the second operation includes redisplaying the application user interface.   
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the first operation includes displaying an application-launching user interface; and   the second operation includes displaying a multitasking user interface.   
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the first output property value of the first user interface element comprises a value a first output property of the first user interface element, and the method includes determining, at a first point in time, whether the user interface meets respective operation criteria based on whether a projected value of the first output property, at a second point in time subsequent to the first point in time, satisfies a respective threshold of the respective operation criteria. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more behavior models that are driven by the one or more input parameters of the user input include one or more predefined physics models. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein the one or more predefined physics models include one or more of: a mass-and-spring model that simulates movement of a mass that is coupled with one or more springs, and a friction/bounce model that simulates movement of a mass subject to friction. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 1 , including determining a respective operation to perform in the user interface in accordance with a velocity of the first user interface element. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 1 , including determining a respective operation to perform in the user interface in accordance with a position of the first user interface element. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 1 , including determining a respective operation to perform in the user interface in accordance with a size of the first user interface element. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 1 , including determining a respective operation to perform in the user interface in accordance with the first output property value and a second output property value of the first user interface element. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 1 , including determining a respective operation to perform in the user interface in accordance with a respective first output property value of the first user interface element and a respective second output property value of a second user interface element distinct from the first user interface element. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the first operation criteria further include a second criterion that is met when a second output property value of a second user interface element distinct from the first user interface element satisfies a corresponding threshold. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the first output property value of the first user interface element is modified based on at least one behavior model that is driven by two or more input parameters of the user input. 
     
     
         19 . An electronic device, comprising:
 a display;   a touch-sensitive surface;   one or more processors; and   memory storing one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:
 displaying, on the display, a user interface that includes a plurality of user interface elements that are displayed in accordance with values of an associated plurality of output properties that define output attributes of respective user interface elements in the plurality of user interface elements; 
 detecting a user input on the touch-sensitive surface, including detecting changes to one or more of a plurality of input parameters that describe the user input, wherein the user input is directed to a first user interface element in the plurality of user interface elements; and 
 in response to detecting the user input:
 modifying a first output property value of the first user interface element based on one or more behavior models that are driven by one or more input parameters of the user input; 
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets first operation criteria, wherein the first operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is above a first threshold, performing a first operation in the user interface; and 
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets second operation criteria, wherein the second operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is below the first threshold, performing a second operation in the user interface that is different from the first operation. 
 
   
     
     
         20 . A computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which, when executed by an electronic device with a display and a touch-sensitive surface, cause the electronic device to:
 display, on the display, a user interface that includes a plurality of user interface elements that are displayed in accordance with values of an associated plurality of output properties that define output attributes of respective user interface elements in the plurality of user interface elements;   detect a user input on the touch-sensitive surface, including detecting changes to one or more of a plurality of input parameters that describe the user input, wherein the user input is directed to a first user interface element in the plurality of user interface elements; and   in response to detecting the user input:
 modify a first output property value of the first user interface element based on one or more behavior models that are driven by one or more input parameters of the user input; 
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets first operation criteria, wherein the first operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is above a first threshold, perform a first operation in the user interface; and 
 in accordance with a determination that the user interface meets second operation criteria, wherein the second operation criteria include a criterion that is met when the first output property value of the first user interface element is below the first threshold, perform a second operation in the user interface that is different from the first operation.
