         19 . A hand surface cleaning apparatus having a front end and a rear end, the hand surface cleaning apparatus comprising:
 (a) an air flow path from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet;   (b) an air treatment member provided in the air flow path;   (c) a motor and fan assembly provided in the air flow path; and   (d) a user interface that is spaced from and overlies the rear end of the hand surface cleaning apparatus.   
     
     
         20 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of claim  1  further comprising a support arm, the support arm has a user interface support that is spaced from and overlies the rear end of the hand surface cleaning apparatus. 
     
     
         21 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 20  wherein the user interface support faces rearwardly. 
     
     
         22 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 20  further comprising an air gap provided between a rear end of a main body of the hand surface cleaning apparatus and the user interface support. 
     
     
         23 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 22  further comprising a fan and suction motor housing and the rear end is a rear end of the fan and suction motor housing. 
     
     
         24 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 19  wherein the support arm extends rearwardly from the rear end. 
     
     
         25 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 19  further comprising a pistol grip handle that is provided on a lower end of the hand surface cleaning apparatus and the support arm extends rearwardly from the pistol grip handle. 
     
     
         26 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 25  wherein the support arm extends rearwardly from an upper end of the pistol grip handle. 
     
     
         27 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 25  further comprising an energy storage member provided at a lower end of the pistol grip handle. 
     
     
         28 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 19  wherein the user interface provides information about at least one operating mode of the hand surface cleaning apparatus. 
     
     
         29 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 19  further comprising an energy storage member and the user interface provides information about a charge level of the energy storage member. 
     
     
         30 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 19  wherein the user interface includes at least one control of the hand surface cleaning apparatus. 
     
     
         31 . A hand surface cleaning apparatus having a front end and a rear end, the hand surface cleaning apparatus comprising:
 (a) an air flow path from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet;   (b) an air treatment member provided in the air flow path;   (c) a motor and fan assembly provided in the air flow path;
 a pistol grip handle, wherein an upper end of the pistol grip handle is mounted to a lower end of the hand surface cleaning apparatus; and, 
   (d) a user interface provided on the handle, wherein the user interface provides information about at least one operating mode of the hand surface cleaning apparatus.   
     
     
         32 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 31  wherein the user interface includes at least one control of the hand surface cleaning apparatus. 
     
     
         33 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 31  further comprising an energy storage member provided at a lower end of the pistol grip handle. 
     
     
         34 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 33  wherein the user interface is provided at an upper end of the pistol grip handle. 
     
     
         35 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 33  further comprising an energy storage member and the user interface provides information about a charge level of the energy storage member. 
     
     
         36 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 19  wherein the user interface provides information about at least one operating mode of the hand surface cleaning apparatus. 
     
     
         37 . A hand surface cleaning apparatus having a front end and a rear end, the hand surface cleaning apparatus comprising:
 (a) an air flow path from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet;   (b) an air treatment member provided in the air flow path;   (c) a motor and fan assembly provided in the air flow path;   (d) a pistol grip handle, wherein an upper end of the pistol grip handle is mounted to a lower end of the hand surface cleaning apparatus; and,   (e) a user interface provided on an upper side of the surface cleaning apparatus,
 wherein the user interface provides information about at least one operating mode of the hand surface cleaning apparatus. 
   
     
     
         38 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 37  wherein the user interface includes at least one control of the hand surface cleaning apparatus. 
     
     
         39 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 37  wherein the hand surface cleaning apparatus has an upper axially extending sidewall and the user interface is provided on the axially extending sidewall. 
     
     
         40 . The hand surface cleaning apparatus of  claim 37  further comprising an energy storage member and the user interface also provides information about a charge level of the energy storage member.
