Abstract

A device agent including an information accessor for accessing association information obtained via an information reader. The association information includes medical device information for uniquely identifying the medical device, and device agent information for facilitating in an association between the medical device and the information reader. The device agent also includes an associator for associating the medical device and the information reader based on the association information.

         21 . An apparatus comprising:
 at least one data processor; and   at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the apparatus to at least:
 receive, during a scan sequence, patient information after an information reader scans a patient identifier associated with a patient, wherein the patient information identifies the patient; 
 receive, during the scan sequence, medication information after the information reader scans a medication barcode on medication to be administered to the patient by an infusion pump; 
 cause, during the scan sequence, a scannable tag to be displayed on a display of an infusion pump, wherein scanning of the scannable tag is configured to enable the infusion pump to receive the patient information and the medication information after the information reader scans the patient identifier and the medication barcode; and 
 cause, after completion of the scan sequence, operation of the infusion pump based on at least one of the patient information and the medication information. 
   
     
     
         22 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the infusion pump to:
 store the medication information in the at least one memory; and   render, on the display of the infusion pump, at least a portion of the medication information.   
     
     
         23 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the scannable tag further comprises routing information defining parameters for routing the medication information to the infusion pump. 
     
     
         24 . The apparatus of  claim 23 , wherein the routing information comprises at least one of: connectivity parameters of the infusion pump or authentication information of the infusion pump. 
     
     
         25 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the scannable tag is configured to provide medical device information uniquely identifying the infusion pump. 
     
     
         26 . The apparatus of  claim 25 , wherein the medical device information uniquely identifying the infusion pump comprises at least one of: a model number of the infusion pump, a serial number of the infusion pump, a media access control address of the infusion pump, or an internet protocol address of the infusion pump. 
     
     
         27 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the scannable tag comprises a barcode. 
     
     
         28 . The apparatus of  claim 27 , wherein the barcode is at least one of a static barcode and a dynamic barcode. 
     
     
         29 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the infusion pump to:
 connect to a communication network;   receive, from a server connected to the communication network and after scanning of the scannable tag, a request for communicative coupling with the infusion pump; and   render, on the display, a dialog to acknowledge the request.   
     
     
         30 . The apparatus of  claim 29 , further comprising a wireless module, and wherein causing the infusion pump to connect to the communication network comprises communicating, via the wireless module, with a wireless network. 
     
     
         31 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the infusion pump to administer a parenteral infusion of at least 100 mL of fluid from a container. 
     
     
         32 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the apparatus receives operational information related to operation of the apparatus from a processing unit coupled to the apparatus based on the information reader obtaining the operational information and the processing unit verifying an association between the apparatus and the information reader. 
     
     
         33 . The apparatus of  claim 32 , wherein the operational information comprises an identifier for the apparatus. 
     
     
         34 . The apparatus of  claim 32 , wherein the operational information comprises medication and/or infusion instructions. 
     
     
         35 . The apparatus of  claim 21 , wherein the apparatus comprises the infusion pump. 
     
     
         36 . An infusion system for medication infusion within a medical environment, the infusion system comprising:
 a display;   an infusion pump;   a scannable tag presentable via the display;   at least one data processor; and   at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the infusion system to at least:
 receive, during a scan sequence, the patient information after an information reader scans a patient identifier associated with a patient, wherein the patient information identifies the patient; 
 receive, during the scan sequence, the medication information after the information reader scans a medication barcode on medication to be administered to the patient by the infusion pump; 
 cause, during the scan sequence after the information reader scans the patient identifier and the medication barcode, the scannable tag to be displayed on the display, wherein scanning of the scannable tag is configured to enable the infusion pump to receive the patient information and the medication information; and 
 cause, after completion of the scan sequence, operation of the infusion pump based on at least one of the patient information and the medication information. 
   
     
     
         37 . The infusion system of  claim 36 , wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the infusion system to:
 store the medication information in the at least one memory; and   render, on the display, at least a portion of the medication information.   
     
     
         38 . The infusion system of  claim 36 , wherein scanning of the scannable tag configures the infusion pump with routing information defining parameters for routing the medication information to the infusion pump. 
     
     
         39 . The infusion system of  claim 38 , wherein the routing information comprises at least one of: connectivity parameters of the infusion pump or authentication information of the infusion pump. 
     
     
         40 . The infusion system of  claim 36 , wherein scanning of the scannable tag causes unique identification of the infusion pump based on medical device information. 
     
     
         41 . The infusion system of  claim 40 , wherein the medical device information uniquely identifying the infusion pump comprises at least one of: a model number of the infusion pump, a serial number of the infusion pump, a media access control address of the infusion pump, or an internet protocol address of the infusion pump. 
     
     
         42 . The infusion system of  claim 36 , wherein the scannable tag comprises a barcode. 
     
     
         43 . The infusion system of  claim 42 , wherein the barcode is at least one of a static barcode and a dynamic barcode. 
     
     
         44 . The infusion system of  claim 36 , wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the infusion pump to:
 connect to a communication network;   receive, from a server connected to the communication network and after scanning of the scannable tag, a request for communicative coupling with the infusion pump; and   render, on the display, a dialog to acknowledge the request.   
     
     
         45 . The infusion system of  claim 44 , further comprising a wireless module, and wherein causing the infusion pump to connect to the communication network comprises communicating, via the wireless module, with a wireless network. 
     
     
         46 . The infusion system of  claim 36 , wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the at least one data processor, cause the infusion pump to administer a parenteral infusion of at least 100 mL of fluid from a container.

The infusion system of  claim 36 , wherein the infusion system receives operational information related to operation of the infusion pump from a processing unit coupled to the infusion system based on the information reader obtaining the operational information and the processing unit verifying an association between the infusion pump and the information reader. 
     
     
         48 . The infusion system of  claim 47 , wherein the operational information comprises at least one of an identifier for the infusion pump, medication instructions, and infusion instructions.
