Enhanced power management for support of priority system events
Abstract
Embodiments are generally directed to enhanced power management for support of priority system events. An embodiment of a system includes a processing element; a memory including a registry for information regarding one or more system events that are designated as priority events; a mechanism to track operation of events that requires Turbo mode operation for execution; and a power control unit to implement a power management algorithm. The system is to maintain an first energy budget and a second residual energy budget for operation in a Turbo power mode, and wherein the power management algorithm is to determine whether to authorize execution of a detected system event in the Turbo power mode based on the second residual energy budget upon determining that the first energy budget is not sufficient for execution of the detected system event and that the detected system event is designated as a priority event. Priority designations for the priority events may include a first High Priority designation and a second Critical designation.

2 . A memory comprising instructions to cause programmable circuitry to at least:
determine whether an event associated with a first application is a priority event; in response to the event not being the priority event, adjust a first operation associated with the first application based on an operation management characteristic to improve a user experience associated with a second application, the second application different than the first application; and in response to the event being the priority event, permit a second operation associated with the second application.
3 . The memory as defined in claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to adjust the first operation to avoid an overheating condition.
4 . The memory as defined in claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to adjust the first operation to control a notification.
5 . The memory as defined in claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to deny the first operation corresponding to the operation management characteristic in response to the event not being the priority event.
6 . The memory as defined in claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to adjust the first operation via an operating system application program interface.
7 . The memory as defined in claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to generate an execution length estimate for the priority event.
8 . The memory as defined in claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to authorize the second operation to exceed a thermal threshold.
9 . The memory as defined in claim 8 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to authorize the second operation to exceed the thermal threshold for a threshold period of time.
10 . The memory as defined in claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the programmable circuitry to determine the event is associated with at least one of launching the first application, launching the second application, responding to a user interface event, or responding to a touch input.
11 . An apparatus comprising:
interface circuitry; instructions; and programmable circuitry to at least one of instantiate or execute the instructions to:
determine whether an event associated with a first service is a priority event;
in response to the event not being the priority event, adjust a first operation associated with the first service based on an operation management characteristic to improve operation with a second service, the second service different than the first service; and
in response to the event being the priority event, permit a second operation associated with the second service.
12 . The apparatus as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions are to cause the programmable circuitry to adjust the first operation to avoid an overheating condition.
13 . The apparatus as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions are to cause the programmable circuitry to adjust the first operation to control a notification.
14 . The apparatus as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions are to cause the programmable circuitry to deny the first operation corresponding to the operation management characteristic in response to the event not being the priority event.
15 . The apparatus as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions are to cause the programmable circuitry to adjust the first operation via an operating system application program interface.
16 . The apparatus as defined in claim 11 , wherein the instructions are to cause the programmable circuitry to generate an execution length estimate for the priority event.
17 . A method comprising:
determining, by executing an instruction with programmable circuitry, whether an event associated with a first application is a priority event; adjusting in response to the event not being the priority event, by executing an instruction with the programmable circuitry, a first operation associated with the first application based on an operation management characteristic to improve performance associated with a second application, the second application different than the first application; and permitting, in response to the event being the priority event, by executing an instruction with the programmable circuitry, a second operation associated with the second application.
18 . The method as defined in claim 17 , further including generating an execution length estimate for the priority event.
19 . The method as defined in claim 17 , further including authorizing the second operation to exceed a thermal threshold.
20 . The method as defined in claim 19 , further including authorizing the second operation to exceed the thermal threshold for a threshold period of time.
