Abstract
Compositions are provided which include an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of propanediol mononitrate and chloroform for the reduction of oxidative stress, the improvement of the immune system, the provision of healthy cartilage, as well as the alleviation of pain in ruminants.

A composition comprising a compound selected from the group consisting of propandiol mononitrate and chloroform, wherein the compound is present in the composition in an amount sufficient to reduce oxidative stress, to improve the immune system, to provide healthy cartilage and/or to alleviate pain accompanying inflammatory diseases in ruminants in need thereof.
2 . The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is administered to the ruminant for an effective period of time to reduce oxidative stress, to improve the immune system, to provide healthy cartilage and/or to alleviate pain accompanying inflammatory diseases.
3 . The composition according to claim 2 , wherein the effective period of time is at least 1 day.
4 . The composition according to claim 2 , wherein the effective period is at least 3 days.
5 . The composition according to claim 2 , wherein the effective period is from one day to 200 days.
6 . The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the propanediol mononitrate or chloroform is administered to the ruminant in an amount of 0.1 to 5 g of propanediol mononitrate or chloroform per animal per day.
7 . The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a powderous formulation comprising the propanediol mononitrate or chloroform and a carrier material.
8 . The composition according to claim 7 , wherein the carrier material is silicone dioxide.
9 . The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the ruminant is selected from the group consisting of domestic cattle, sheep and goats.
10 . The composition according to claim 9 , wherein the ruminant is domestic cattle selected from the group consisting of dairy cows and beef cattle.
11 . The composition according to claim 10 , wherein the composition is administered to dairy cows before lactation onset.
12 . The composition according to claim 11 , wherein the composition is administered to the dairy cows for a period from 100 days prior to lactation onset to 1 day prior to lactation onset.
