We claim: 
     
         1 . A method for making an amide-containing, polymeric thiophene hueing agent, wherein the amide is formed via hydrolysis of a nitrile under basic conditions. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the basic conditions are formed in the presence of at least one of carbonates, bicarbonates, amines, hydroxides, alkoxides, and mixtures thereof.
